Residents in the United States have high expectations for Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to the U.S., hoping that it can see a further improvement in bilateral ties between China and the U.S. and help address several major issues.
Xi arrived in the U.S. on Wednesday to begin a three-day state visit at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump. It comes after Trump had himself made a state visit to China in May, which marked the first by a U.S. president in nearly nine years.
In street interviews with the China Global Television Network (CGTN), residents said they hope the face-to-face talks between Xi and Trump will cut through misunderstandings, and bring much needed forward motion to bilateral relations.
"I think it's really good that they meet face-to-face the way they are, because it's good for the human element and it's important to keep that in mind as we deal with all the abstractions of AI and trade and all the issues that both our countries face," said a U.S. resident named Alexander Adams.
"I think it would be amazing if it went positively and they reconsidered the tariffs. I work in solar energy and it's like a huge concern that solar panels will get much more expensive and a lot of technology will [be affected] -- it'll make being sustainable even harder than it is already and more expensive. So I hope that it could improve," said Zoey Burlow, who works in the energy sector.
In today's turbulent world, many say they'd like to see the two major countries work together more to find solutions to pressing global issues.
"I mean I'd hope so that communication could bring more of a partnership but not just like fear-mongering each other," said Brandon Lowens, another resident.
"I wanna see cooperation between all the countries in this world. We need this," said resident Anna Pilar Vallejo.
"I hope they can do some AI cooperation. I think it's badly needed," said Sebastian Vazquez, another resident.
