China opens new high-speed railway in Hubei, expanding world's largest network

China opened a new high-speed railway to traffic in the central Hubei Province on Monday, furthering expanding the world's largest high-speed rail network.

The newly opened line connects Yichang City and Xingshan County under Yichang and forms a key part that bridges Sichuan and Chongqing area in southwest China with the central part of China.

With a total length of 101 kilometers, it has a designed speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

At the beginning of the operation, the route will cut travel time between Wuhan, the provincial capital of Hubei and Chongqing Municipality -- two cities over 700 kilometers apart -- to just three hours and 54 minutes.

In addition to the Yichang-Xingshan route, three other major high-speed rail lines were opened to traffic on Monday in China, including the country's northernmost high-speed railway in Heilongjiang Province in the northeast.

China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its national sovereignty and opposing foreign interference, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Monday, in response to a media inquiry on the development of China-Cuba relations.
