Hong Kong Science Museum Launches “Food (R)Evolutions” Exhibition, Showcasing Culinary Science

The Hong Kong Science Museum (HKScM) is collaborating with the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau to launch the "Food (R)Evolutions" exhibition from October 1 to October 28 at the Exhibition Hall on the ground floor of the HKScM. Bringing together culture, science and innovation, the exhibition showcases the science behind cooking. The exhibition is a programme of the French Science Festival.

Addressing the opening ceremony today (September 30), the Acting Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Culture), Mr Ng Chi-wo, expressed gratitude to the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau for bringing to visitors the fascinating exhibition and an exciting array of extension activities. The exhibition also showcases iconic Hong Kong delicacies whose making techniques are inscribed onto the Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory of Hong Kong. Combining French scientific insights with Hong Kong's popularly beloved craftsmanship, the exhibition allows visitors to fully appreciate the scientific depth underpinning both food cultures.

Other officiating guests included the Deputy Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, Mr Benjamin Hubin, and the Museum Director of the HKScM, Mr Patrick Lau.

The exhibition will introduce scientists from different eras dedicated to studying ingredients and their transformations, and will explore molecular gastronomy techniques, future dietary trends, sustainable diets, senior-friendly diets, space food and more. A dedicated corner "Taste of Hong Kong" explores the science behind the distinctive textures, aromas and tastes of iconic "cha chaan teng" favourites, including pineapple buns, egg tarts and milk tea. The exhibition will also showcase gerontech innovations designed to support elderly dining provided by the LU Jockey Club Gerontech-X Lab of Lingnan University, along with molecular gastronomy tools provided by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Incoming passenger convicted and jailed for importing duty-not-paid cigarettes and alternative smoking products

An incoming female passenger was sentenced to six months' imprisonment and fined $2,000 by the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts today (September 30) for importing duty-not-paid cigarettes, failing to declare them to Customs officers, as well as importing alternative smoking products, in contravention of the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance (DCO) and the Import and Export Ordinance (IEO).

Customs officers intercepted a 50-year-old incoming Mainland female passenger arriving in Hong Kong from Tokyo, Japan, at Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (September 29) and seized about 2 400 duty-not-paid cigarettes and 32 000 alternative smoking products, with an estimated market value of about $107,000 and a duty potential of about $8,000, from her personal baggage. The passenger was subsequently arrested.

Customs welcomes the sentence. The custodial sentence has imposed a considerable deterrent effect and reflects the seriousness of the offences.

Customs reminds members of the public that under the DCO, tobacco products are dutiable goods to which the DCO applies. Any person who imports, deals with, possesses, sells or buys duty-not-paid tobacco commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.

Under the IEO, any person who imports an alternative smoking product into Hong Kong commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
