U.S. dollar ticks up

The U.S. dollar strengthened in late trading on Wednesday.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, gained 0.08 percent to 101.451 at 15:00 (1900 GMT).

In late New York trading, the euro fell to 1.1332 dollars from 1.1341 dollars in the previous session, while the British pound rose to 1.3262 dollars from 1.3229 dollars.

The U.S. dollar bought 157.34 Japanese yen, higher than 157.22 yen in the previous session. It rose to 0.8354 Swiss francs from 0.8336 Swiss francs, and advanced to 1.4229 Canadian dollars from 1.4178 Canadian dollars. The U.S. dollar also climbed to 10.0103 Swedish kronor from 9.9892 Swedish kronor.

European stocks closed lower across the board on Wednesday, pressured by persistently high government bond yields in several European countries and rising oil prices.

The United Kingdom's FTSE 100 index fell 0.29 percent to close at 10,606.00 points. France's CAC 40 index dropped 0.89 percent to finish at 7,964.51 points. Germany's DAX index lost 0.79 percent to end the session at 25,199.19 points.
