Maye Musk, the 76-year-old mother of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, appeared in Hong Kong on October 3 for a panel discussion. A writer, supermodel, and nutritionist, she shared her insights on leadership, resilience, and legacy, drawing a large audience.

Beyond her fashion career, Maye Musk embraces new technology far faster than most. She was the first in the Musk family to use Twitter, now X, and habitually uses AI tools such as Grok to plan her schedule. At the forum, she even corrected the host on stage: “You know, three days ago it was already renamed SI — Super Intelligence!” Her quick reaction left a deep impression on those present.

Despite embracing new technology, she stressed the irreplaceable value of exploring the physical world. “AI tells us many things, but if you want to go to Mars or the Moon, you have to build the rocket yourself,” she said. The remark echoed her son’s space ventures while underscoring her insistence on action.

Mention Maye Musk, and people inevitably think of the other members of the Musk family — from Elon, who built SpaceX, and Kimbal, a restaurateur, to Tosca, a film company founder. The public always hopes to learn her “god-tier parenting secrets.” Yet she stated in response: “We actually had no rules.” She recalled that as a single mother raising three children, she worked from morning to night and had no time for excessive control. Her only requirement was that the children be responsible for themselves. That hands-off approach forced them to become independent very early.

She also shared a detail: before SpaceX was founded, Elon came downstairs one morning looking exhausted and told her he had spent the night designing a rocket. Maye simply asked: “So, would you like some scrambled eggs?” No fuss, no probing, just a mother’s plain concern for her son.

Maye acknowledged that whenever Elon founded a new company, the public predicted it would surely fail, yet he succeeded every time through resilience. She therefore always chose to support and trust her children’s decisions: “If they bet everything and failed, they could always come back and sleep on my couch. I know they have the ability to start over.” That unconditional support may well be the source of the Musk family members’ courage to take risks.
