U.S. stocks close higher

U.S. stocks ended higher on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 253.38 points, or 0.49 percent, to 51,521.28.

The S&P 500 added 44.98 points, or 0.58 percent, to 7,818.93.

The Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 122.48 points, or 0.45 percent, to 27,599.79.

Ten of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in the green, with utilities and consumer discretionary leading the gainers by going up 3.01 percent and 1.39 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, health bucked the trend by dropping 0.16 percent.

International gold and silver prices closed higher on Tuesday, supported by a pause ​in the U.S. Treasury yield's rally and a weaker dollar.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures for December delivery rose 0.73 percent to settle at 4,187.10 U.S. dollars per ounce, while silver futures for December delivery increased 0.47 percent to close at 61.589 dollars per ounce.
