The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, lost 993.60 points, or 1.42 percent, to close at 69,042.11.
The broader Topix index, meanwhile, finished 62.65 points, or 1.51 percent, lower at 4,091.46 points.
Tokyo stocks end lower on Thursday
The stocks of the Republic of Korea (ROK) closed lower on Thursday.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) dropped 177.97 points, or 2.62 percent, to close at 6,625.93 points, and the tech-heavy KOSDAQ Index lost 6.16 points, or 0.69 percent, to finish at 892.27 points.
