InvestHK welcomes Honor's continued expansion in Hong Kong, adding momentum to local I&T ecosystem

Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) today (October 13) welcomed the opening of Honor's seventh experience store in Hong Kong, expanding its local footprint toward a 10-store target in 2026. The Acting Director-General of Investment Promotion, Mr Arnold Lau, and the General Manager of Honor Device Hong Kong and Macao, Mr Tang Kei Tang, officiated at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new store today.

Mr Lau said, "We are pleased to witness Honor further expand its retail network in Hong Kong. The new store reflects the company's confidence in the local market and offers consumers greater access to innovative technology products. Hong Kong's First Five-Year Plan and the 2026 Policy Address set out directions for promoting innovation and technology (I&T), as well as AI development, creating a favourable environment for technology enterprises. InvestHK is committed to building Hong Kong into an international I&T hub, and working with the industry to foster a robust, reliable, global, and sustainable AI ecosystem."

Mr Tang said, "AI is a strategic focus for Honor, and we will continue to develop a full-scenario smart device ecosystem. As demand among Hong Kong consumers for premium smart devices and AI experiences continues to rise, Hong Kong serves not only as an important platform for Honor to showcase innovative technologies, but also a key indicator for the brand to gain insight into the high-end market and consumer experience needs. We are confident about Honor's prospects in Hong Kong, and through the new store we look forward to bringing local consumers a more comprehensive and convenient smart living experience."

Since its entry into Hong Kong in 2022, Honor's local business strategy has evolved from product introduction and channel development to a full-scenario ecosystem centred on AI innovation. Its products now cover smartphones, tablets, laptops, wearable devices, and Artificial Intelligence of Things(AIoT) ecosystem products. Building on its existing network of self-operated experience stores, Honor continues to expand its scale, further strengthening consumer interaction and after-sales services.

Hong Kong Customs detects duty-not-paid manufactured tobacco smuggling case at Shenzhen Bay Control Point

Hong Kong Customs detected a duty-not-paid manufactured tobacco smuggling case at the Shenzhen Bay Control Point yesterday (October 12). A total of about 8 000 kilograms of duty-not-paid manufactured tobacco, with an estimated market value of about $53.4 million and a duty potential of about $32 million, was seized from an inbound medium goods vehicle (MGV). A male local driver involved in the case was arrested.

Based on intelligence analysis, Customs officers intercepted the MGV, declared as carrying wood-plastic flooring in the above-mentioned Control Point. Upon examination, Customs officers did not find any declared goods but about 300 boxes of unmanifested and duty-not-paid manufactured tobacco in the MGV, and immediately arrested the 51-year-old local male driver.

The case is still under investigation. Customs will continue to trace the source and flow of the manufactured tobacco. The likelihood of further arrests is not ruled out.

Customs will continue its risk assessment and intelligence analysis to vigorously combat cross-border smuggling activities.

Customs stresses that smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance (Cap. 60), any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years. Moreover, under the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance (Cap. 109), any person who deals with, possesses, sells or buys illicit cigarettes commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.

Members of the public may report any suspected illicit cigarette and smuggling activities to Customs' 24-hour hotline 182 8080 or its dedicated crime-reporting email account(crimereport@customs.gov.hk) or online form (eform.cefs.gov.hk/form/ced002).
