Hurricane Trudy brings heavy rain and strong winds to Mexico’s Pacific coast

MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Trudy lashed parts of Mexico’s Pacific coast with heavy rain and strong winds Sunday as the U.S. National Hurricane Center warned of potentially life-threatening flooding and mudslides.

A hurricane warning remained in effect from Manzanillo in Colima state to Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco. The latest NHC data showed the Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (165 kph) moving northwest off Mexico’s Pacific coast at 10 mph (17 kph).

Meanwhile, Typhoon Champi was moving away from Guam as a Category 4 super typhoon.

Trudy’s center was expected to remain near the Mexican coast through Sunday evening before moving south of the Baja California Peninsula on Monday and Tuesday. A tropical storm warning remained in effect for Las Islas Marias. A warning for the coast east of Punta San Telmo to Lazaro Cardenas had been discontinued.

The Mexican navy urged mariners and coastal residents to exercise extreme caution because of high waves, heavy rain and the risk of rising rivers, flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Colima authorities said the risks remained low, but warned that heavy rainfall could cause damage because the ground was already saturated by successive storms along the Pacific coast.

Trudy was expected to bring 4-8 inches (10-20 centimeters) of rain through the weekend, with isolated totals of around 12 inches (30 centimeters) along and near the coast in Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco. The hurricane center warned of potentially life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas with steep terrain.

Also in the Pacific, Champi was moving away from Guam on Sunday after passing close to the island’s southern tip, with sustained winds of 150 mph (240 kph). Late Sunday afternoon it was 200 miles (320 kilometers) west of Guam, moving west at 14 mph (23 kph), according to the U.S. National Weather Service.

The storm was forecast to weaken through Monday but remain a major typhoon. All tropical cyclone watches and warnings for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan had been canceled.

The governors of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands requested emergency disaster declarations on Friday.

On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for Guam authorizing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate all federal disaster relief efforts. FEMA announced that federal disaster assistance was available for the territory of Guam to supplement local response efforts following Typhoon Champi.

Airports, harbors and some health facilities in the territories were closed. Resources were unlikely to reach the islands for three to five days, according to Saturday updates from FEMA.

The territories are still recovering from super typhoons Sinlaku and Bavi, which struck in April and July, respectively.

SHANGHAI (AP) — Alejandro Davidovich Fokina rallied from a set and a break down to beat Rafael Jodar 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 and win the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, securing his third title of the year and biggest yet of his career.

The 25th-seeded Spaniard had lost the first five finals of his career, including the Monte Carlo Masters in 2022.

His other titles this year came on grass in Mallorca in June and at the Chengdu Open in China last month. Both were ATP 250 tournaments.

He clutched the Shanghai trophy tightly and then kissed it.

“I don’t have any words right now,” Davidovich Fokina said. “I have a blank mind. I don’t know what to say and I don’t know how I feel. Just a huge relief.”

Davidovich Fokina was close to going out of the tournament, saving a match point in the third round against three-time U.S. Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe. He then rallied from a set down against future No. 1 Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.

The 20-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar, seeded No. 12, was also appearing in his first Masters 1000 final and looked set for a second career title following a dominant first set.

But like against Zverev, Davidovich Fokina fought back again.

He used his court speed to break back to 3-3 in the second set, retrieving a drop shot by pushing a backhand pass down the line, despite being off balance. He fell on his back and spread his arms out to celebrate winning that point.

Jodar called for a trainer at 4-3 in the third set and had a massage on his right thigh.

In the next game, he grimaced in pain and clutched his left foot after slightly twisting it when running to the net. He then had a massage on his left thigh at the changeover.

“In the third set, maybe I had a bit more fitness physically,” the 27-year-old Davidovich Fokina said. "He's an amazing player and it was very tough to play against him.”

He won on his second match point when Jodar, who beat former Shanghai champion Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal, could not return his serve.
