Trump says he 'heard something about' Justice Department probe into longtime ally Corey Lewandowski

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump told reporters that he had “heard something about” the Department of Justice investigating allegations that Corey Lewandowski profited off his past role as an adviser at the Department of Homeland Security, after media reports of an investigation surfaced Thursday.

Lewandowski, who worked at the agency as a special government employee during Kristi Noem's tenure as Homeland Security secretary, was longtime ally of Trump. The details of the allegations against Lewandowski aren't yet clear, though the president said Thursday after a report in The Wall Street Journal that he had heard of the probe.

The president notably didn't defend Lewandowski, who was his first campaign manager in 2016.

“I don't know exactly what it is,” Trump told reporters. “All I know is, I want my people to be honest. And if they’re not going to be honest, they have to be prosecuted." He added, "I'll have my DOJ go and do whatever they have to do.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that the probe was launched after a referral from the DHS inspector general, which included details about Lewandowski's time at the agency. Lewandowski was Noem’s lead adviser while at the department, where he appeared to play an outsized role even though his position was supposed to have a limit on days worked.

An attorney for Lewandowski, Adam Trigg, wrote in a texted comment to The Associated Press that “Mr. Lewandowski has not been contacted by the Justice Department regarding any investigation, and he denies any wrongdoing when he was proudly serving his country in a voluntary capacity.”

The Washington Sun reported this week that some open records requests from the department during Lewandowski’s time there were denied due to an ongoing criminal probe.

An investigation into a longtime Trump adviser would be a departure for the Justice Department, which has focused considerable efforts at investigating and attempting to prosecute longtime Trump political critics.

The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the AP.

CHICAGO (AP) — Rhamondre Stevenson and New England were in a bad spot. Then the right call at the right time provided a momentary lift for the Patriots.

Stevenson scored an unlikely touchdown on the final play of the first half Thursday night against the Chicago Bears. Stevenson's fifth career TD reception trimmed New England's deficit to 20-14 at the break, but the Bears held off the Patriots for a 30-24 win.

“We’ve been working on that play for a long time and came in handy today, executed on that play,” Stevenson said. “So felt good to do that.”

Chicago opened a 13-point lead when it scored on Luther Burden's 24-yard reception with 14 seconds left in the opening half. Kyle Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 25 yards to the New England 34.

Drake Maye then fired an 18-yard pass to A.J. Brown, and the Patriots used their second timeout with 3 seconds to go.

On the next play, Stevenson slipped out of the backfield and Maye lobbed the ball over the head of Bears safety Cam Lewis. Stevenson ran away from Lewis and got a downfield block from DeMario Douglas before cutting past Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson on his way to the end zone.

“I feel like it brought us some momentum, but obviously not enough,” Stevenson said. “We didn’t come out with the win.”

Stevenson’s 48-yard reception moved New England's win probability from 10.2% to 24.5%, according to Next Gen Stats. The running back covered a total distance of 68.18 yards on the play, and he had a 4.3% chance of scoring.

“I think we could have rallied to the ball there and gotten him down,” Chicago coach Ben Johnson said.
