Rescue teams rushed to the quake-hit region in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region in early hours Friday following a strong earthquake that claimed at least 16 lives.

A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Baqen County of Nagqu City in Xizang Autonomous Region, at 22:33 Thursday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The earthquake caused 54 injuries and collapsed 339 homes as of 07:00 Friday, data from Xizang's emergency command showed.

The China Earthquake Administration initiated a Level-II emergency response following the earthquake.

Hundreds of rescuers, including police officers, firefighters and medical personnel, reached the disaster zone to search for survivors, treat the injured, and assess damage.

More than 300 police officers have been dispatched to the epicenter for relief work while the regional fire and rescue corps has mobilized 347 personnel to the affected areas.

Emergency supplies dispatched by authorities at national, regional, municipal and county levels began arriving in the disaster zone by 04:30 Friday, including 1,000 prefabricated housing units, 3,239 tents, 2,821 folding beds, 4,280 quilts, and winter clothing.

Meanwhile, traffic police are on duty around the clock to ensure that the roads leading to the disaster-stricken area are safe, unobstructed and orderly.

The damage caused by the quake is being further assessed, and disaster relief work is well underway.
