MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Toronto Raptors star forward Kawhi Leonard was held out of the team's loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday night because of swelling in his left knee.
Leonard did not appear on the injury report for the Raptors until an hour before tipoff at Minnesota. The team announced he had an effusion, which is an abnormal buildup of excess fluid around the joint.
Coach Darko Rajakovic said after the 117-94 loss to the Timberwolves that Leonard would undergo further medical testing on Monday before his timeline for returning to action is determined. Toronto's next game is at home against Orlando on Wednesday.
Leonard, who returned this season to the Raptors after leading them to the NBA championship in 2019, had 16 points on 7-for-20 shooting in 28 minutes in Toronto's victory at Washington on Friday. He had 23 points on 5-for-17 shooting in 24 minutes in the opening win at Chicago on Wednesday night.
The 35-year-old, who spent the last seven seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, has been hampered by knee trouble throughout his decorated 15-year career. The seven-time All-Star has averaged just 53 games played per regular season since his debut with the San Antonio Spurs in 2011.

Leaders across the Americas congratulated Brazilian President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on social media Sunday after he defeated opposition candidate Flávio Bolsonaro to win an unprecedented fourth term.
The region’s other left-leaning leaders were particularly quick to react to the result. Lula is a revered figure to Latin America’s left, having governed the country between 2003-2010 when leftists were at the helm in countries across the region. Since returning to power in 2023, he has been a vocal critic of Trump.
Long live democracy, the people of Brazil won. Congratulations, President Lula!
Dear brother Lula, on behalf of the Cuban government and people, I congratulate you for this historic victory that ensures the continuity of the path of peace, sovereignty and social justice embarked upon by the Brazilian people under your leadership.
Brazil can count on Cuba in the construction of the unity and integration of our Great Homeland, Latin American and the Caribbean.
Congratulations (...) to you, comrade President Lula, who in your seventh presidential election knew how to awaken your compatriots' passions and their reason to win this battle.
Chile and Brazil have a lot of shared future ahead, and we will continue working on an agenda that strengthens relations between our countries in economic integration and the fight against organized crime in the region.
Bolivia and Brazil are neighboring and sister countries, united by a shared history and common challenges. We will continue working together to strengthen our relationship and generate more opportunities for our nations.
Lula has stood up for Brazilian workers & democracy — and will continue to do so in the next four years.
