The Halloween atmosphere has swept across Hong Kong. Ms. Anthea Cheung, Director of the Lan Kwai Fong Association, said that Lan Kwai Fong had recorded at least a 30 to 40 percent increase in turnover over the past two weekends, and that bars and restaurants in the area had prepared sufficient beverages and food in advance to welcome customers.

She pointed out that this year the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) organised the first-ever “Hong Kong Halloween Month”, rolling out Halloween activities earlier than usual. The response exceeded expectations, making it the liveliest Halloween in recent years. Local customers remained the main market, accounting for about 70 percent, with the rest coming from overseas and the Mainland. Benefiting from convenient transport links, the number of visitors from the Greater Bay Area increased noticeably, with many dressing up to enjoy themselves in Lan Kwai Fong, creating a very good atmosphere.

Anthea also said that some bars and restaurants had reserved a portion of seats for walk-in customers, while other reservations had long been fully booked. Summarising this year’s experience, she said future efforts would focus on strengthening bundled packages covering hotels, dining and transport to attract more visitors to Hong Kong, hoping they would stay longer and boost spending.

This year, many Mainland tourists and residents dressed up and joined the revelry in all kinds of costumes. Some Mainland tourists said they had come specifically to experience Hong Kong’s Halloween atmosphere, and after celebrating Halloween on Saturday night, they would return to the Mainland via Huanggang Port, expressing confidence in the border-crossing arrangements and believing it would not be extremely crowded.

Halloween has arrived, and the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has expanded this year’s celebrations by joining hands with industry partners to launch the first-ever “Hong Kong Halloween Month”. The “Next Stop, Mong Kok! Langham Place Halloween Street Fest” held on October 31 is one of its highlights. The organiser has blended street culture, live music, costume photo ops and local delicacies into a street carnival brimming with Hong Kong characteristics, drawing crowds of residents and tourists who came specifically to take photos and soak in the atmosphere.

Ms. Tang, a resident, said she is usually busy with work and learned about the event through social media, so she came specifically to experience the vibe. She felt the event combines a variety of distinctive elements, and that the overall decorations and atmosphere are refreshing, attracting many tourists to the site for photos.

Among the attendees were travellers who had dressed up elaborately. Shan, a tourist from Jamaica, and her daughters came dressed as characters from “101 Dalmatians”, drawing passers-by to stop and take photos with them. Shan said her family chose a family-themed costume to show their togetherness. She also felt Hong Kong’s festive atmosphere is very harmonious, and they planned to head to Tsim Sha Tsui during the weekend to celebrate Halloween with relatives and friends.

Mainland tourist Ms. Bao described the scene as a large-scale “cosplay” party with a lively atmosphere and friendly staff. However, she found the crowd too congested and suggested that crowd management could be improved in the future to enhance the experience. She added that she and her friends had not yet visited other events and were looking forward to a wonderful evening in Lan Kwai Fong over the Halloween weekend.
