NEW YORK (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski is among four members of the World Series champions who are finalists for baseball's biggest individual awards.
The Miz, a heavy favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award, was one of the top three vote-getters in balloting for the prize by the Baseball Writers' Association of America at the conclusion of the regular season.
Finalists for all the major BBWAA awards were announced Monday night on MLB Network. Winners will be revealed next week.
Gold Glove second baseman Brice Turang is in the running for National League MVP, and Milwaukee skipper Pat Murphy could become the first to win three consecutive Manager of the Year awards. Brewers closer Trevor Megill is a finalist for NL Relief Pitcher of the Year, a new category this year in both leagues.
The awards finalists:
Houston slugger Yordan Alvarez is the favorite to win. Third baseman Junior Caminero from the AL champion Tampa Bay Rays and shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals are the other finalists.
Gold Glove center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Chicago Cubs is expected to win after batting .280 with 45 home runs and 41 stolen bases, becoming the seventh member of the 40-40 club. Turang and four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers are also finalists.
It's between Toronto right-hander Dylan Cease, Cleveland lefty Parker Messick and New York Yankees ace Cam Schlittler. Messick's top-three finish as a rookie earns the Guardians an extra pick after the first round of the 2027 amateur draft.
Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves and fellow left-hander Cristopher Sánchez from the Philadelphia Phillies join Misiorowski.
Messick is also a candidate here, along with Detroit infielder Kevin McGonigle and Boston left-hander Payton Tolle.
New York Mets right fielder Carson Benge is joined by Cincinnati Reds infielder Sal Stewart and St. Louis Cardinals second baseman JJ Wetherholt.
The contenders are Tampa Bay closer Bryan Baker, Cleveland closer Cade Smith and Toronto closer Louis Varland.
The other candidates besides Megill are Philadelphia closer Jhoan Duran and San Diego closer Mason Miller.
Kevin Cash from the Rays, Chad Tracy of the Boston Red Sox and Will Venable from the Chicago White Sox are in the running.
Murphy's challengers are Philadelphia's Don Mattingly and Atlanta's Walt Weiss.

DALLAS (AP) — Law enforcement will beef up its presence in a Dallas entertainment district where several deadly shootings occurred over the weekend, federal authorities announced Monday as they joined elected officials nationwide in decrying gun violence in popular public places.
Across the country, numerous mass shootings on Halloween weekend left at least 10 people dead and dozens more injured. In Dallas, three shootings in Deep Ellum, a neighborhood of music and restaurants, left four people dead and 15 injured over the span of an hour and 15 minutes early Sunday.
“Everyone deserves the freedom to walk down the street, to celebrate a fun night out during our nation’s holidays and to simply exist in public without fear for their safety or their children’s safety,” Ryan Raybould, U.S. attorney for the northern district of Texas, said at a news conference.
Many shootings occurred around gathering spots during the confluence of what might be one of the last spells of warm weather this year that drew large crowds outside on Halloween, which this year happened to fall on a weekend.
As investigators continued to look for suspects and the motives behind the shootings, word spread of even more mass violence over the weekend. Two separate shootings occurred in Birmingham, Alabama, after the annual “Magic City Classic” college football game Saturday night. And police in college towns reported shootings in their nightlife districts where annual Halloween gatherings are popular, including in Fayetteville, Arkansas; Newark, Delaware; Bloomington, Illinois; and Bloomington, Indiana.
Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said police were pursuing leads on possible suspects in the Deep Ellum shootings, which he called "senseless” and the result of arguments. It's undetermined if the shootings were related.
Comeaux and Raybould were joined by others at a news conference to announce “Operation Deep Cover,” a federal and local law enforcement response to gun violence in Deep Ellum.
Raybould said one man who allegedly wore a ski mask and pointed a loaded gun in the direction of a crowd in Deep Ellum was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The entertainment district experienced deadly violence earlier this year. Two people were fatally stabbed outside a nightclub in February, and a security guard was shot and killed while trying to break up a fight inside a nightclub in May. Among nonfatal shootings, five people were wounded outside of a sports bar in May, police said.
“The violence has to end, and it will end,” Raybould said. “I’m tired of reading the news stories.”
Multiple academic studies of police department and hospital data from major cities over the last decade have shown gun violence is more frequent at night, on weekends and on holidays. Several studies have pointed to the July Fourth holiday as being one of the most or the most violent holiday because of dark hours for fireworks celebrations, combined with alcohol consumption and other factors. New Year’s and Halloween were also high on the list for gun violence incidents.
“Halloween falling on a Saturday, it seems to have really created this toxic brew: large crowds of young people out late, mild weather, likely alcohol consumption and just the normal risks that come with holiday weekend partying and arguments," said Ernesto Lopez, a research specialist for the nonprofit Council on Criminal Justice. "I think all those things put together could increase the likelihood of violence.”
Last year the homicide rate in the United States dropped to its lowest point in 75 years, according to FBI numbers on 2025 crime. Those numbers showed homicides decreased by 18% and overall violent crime dropped 9.3% last year.
Cities and municipalities across the country largely have been experiencing drops in homicides and violence, with a few exceptions, for the past few years. Federal authorities and nonprofit groups have noted national violent crime and homicide rates have been declining since 2022.
In Jackson, Mississippi, two people ages 18 and 20 were killed and six others suffered non-life-threatening injuries in a shooting during a Halloween costume party at a nightclub early Sunday, police said. Two men had entered the club wearing ski masks, and at some point, at least one of them opened fire into the crowd, police said. The suspects have not yet been identified.
“No one should have to fear for their life while enjoying an evening out,” Jackson Mayor John Horhn said in a statement following the shooting.
Near Indiana University's campus, seven people were wounded in a shooting early Sunday in a busy nightlife area. None of the victims were believed to be students, police said.
“This is unacceptable in Bloomington, and in any community,” Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson said Sunday in a video address shared on social media.
Even with increased police staffing, no public safety plan can eliminate every act of violence, Thomson said.
In Birmingham, Alabama, a 19-year-old was killed and eight other people were wounded in separate shootings just outside Legion Field on Saturday night.
The back-to-back shootings marred the end of the Magic City Classic, the annual game between Alabama State University and Alabama A&M University. The matchup between the two historically Black colleges and universities stretches back more than 80 years and draws thousands of people to Birmingham each year. Nearly 70,000 fans attended the game, won by Alabama A&M 31-28.
Police announced Monday night that a 17-year-old was charged with murder and possession of a machine gun conversion device in connection with the death.
“Swift justice is a small step toward healing,” Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin wrote on social media.
Woodfin said the violence should not overshadow the event’s 85-year legacy.
“This shooting had absolutely nothing to do with the Magic City Classic and we will not buy into false narratives about our HBCUs. We will continue to support the Magic City Classic,” Woodfin wrote.
Along the California coast north of Monterey, authorities responded just before 2 a.m. Monday to a report of shots fired at Moss Landing State Beach and found two people dead, said Monterey County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Andres Rosas. He said a third person who was shot had gone to a hospital, and a fourth person taken to the hospital from the scene had injuries that weren’t life-threatening.
Rosas said authorities are still trying to determine the circumstances of what happened.
