China will closely monitor the ongoing investigation of last Saturday's deadly knife attack inside a Sydney mall which resulted in the death of one Chinese national and the injury of another, according to a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman at a press briefing in Beijing on Monday.
Six people fell victim to the lone assailant, who was eventually shot dead by a police officer. Lin Jian, the spokesman, confirmed the death and injury of Chinese nationals, saying China has requested Australia to treat the wounded with every effort and provide relevant assistance.
"On April 13, a knife attack occurred in a shopping mall in Sydney, Australia, causing multiple casualties. After the incident, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs directed the embassy and consulate in Australia to immediately activate emergency consular protection and verify the casualties of Chinese citizens. According to the Australian side's report, the incident so far resulted in the death of one Chinese citizen and another has been injured. The embassy and consulate in Australia have requested the Australian side to do its best to treat the injured and actively provide assistance to victims' family members coming over for follow-up matters, and will closely monitor the development of the investigation," Lin said.
