The Global Prompt Engineering Championship, the world's biggest AI prompt challenge, opened in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates on Monday.
Prompt engineering is an emerging discipline that focuses on the process of guiding generative artificial intelligence to produce desired outputs. Prompt engineers need to choose the most appropriate formats, phrases, words and symbols to guide the AI into more meaningful interactions with users.
"We believe that prompt engineering will be one of the major skill sets in the future, as it will allow people to be able to use AI in the right format. So the more we build people's prompt engineering skills, the outcomes will be better of what we're creating," said AlJaziri, vice chairman of the Dubai Future Foundation, which oversees the organization of the event.
According to the organizer, the competition received thousands of entries from around 100 countries and regions across the globe.
The final stage that takes place on Monday and Tuesday features 30 shortlisted candidates who are set to compete in three categories -- Art, Literature and Coding -- for a total prize fund of AED 1 million (272,262 U.S. dollars).
"It's very fast, 10-minute quick rounds. We have to think very quickly. We have to come up with a narrative in the prompt and also ascribe some artistic effects to it as well. And really, 10 minutes is very challenging, but that's why it's a big prize," said Hamza Shaikh, a contestant in the art creation category.
Organizers said that the field of artificial intelligence has unlimited prospects and hopes that this event will help create new opportunities, promote growth and accelerate transformation.
"So they have 10 minutes and they have to start by deciding how they're going to be prompting, whatever machine that they've decided to work with, and then the iterations of those prompts, all the way to the final result. So what we're looking for is someone who can really clearly give the machine a prompt, who can have a conversation with the machine to refine the final output. And then of course, most importantly, we look at the final result. And we're looking for something that is innovative, striking, feels different and fresh," said Benedetta Ghione, a judge for the Global Prompt Engineering Championship.
