Chinese and Japanese economists had a constructive dialogue in Tokyo on Friday, exchanging views on the global economy and on areas where the two countries can strengthen cooperation.
More than 50 experts and scholars from China and Japan attended the dialogue co-sponsored by the Japan Forum on International Relations and the Institute of Japanese Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and discussed a wide range of economic topics of common concern.
During the dialogue, the Chinese and Japanese experts and scholars covered some of the biggest issues facing their respective economies, as the goal of the dialogue was to strengthen understanding between the two countries.
"Sustainable development is also a big issue for all the countries, for all the human beings. I think both countries have their specific advantage. If we can cooperate, we can benefit from each other," said Chen Weidong, executive deputy director of the International Finance Institute of the Bank of China.
The experts agreed that regular communication and dialogue is crucial to better understand each other and find ways to cooperate. They called on both sides to identify areas where both countries can make joint investments in third countries and take advantage of regional initiatives, such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), to support rules-based trade and reduce policy risks in the private sector.
"I think it is very important to communicate with each other, even in a subtle difficult geopolitical tension era. So still, we have many things that we can cooperate. I think it's very important to do step by step, to communicate in various ways. And that would give us much more constructive relationship," said Fukunari Kimura, a professor with the Faculty of Economics of Keio University.
"We need to reorganize, and we have to find a good cooperation or some common agreement regarding the security issues. Otherwise we cannot start to talk about the economic issues. So, anyway, security issue is the very urgent issue to talk about," said Mariko Watanabe, a professor with the Faculty of Economics of Gakushuin University.
The Chinese and Japanese experts both agreed that strengthening bilateral cooperation and investments are essential for the two countries to overcome current global economic challenges with dialogue like this to ensure security and peace in the region.
