In the face of "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and external encouragement and support for them, China is not going to sit on its hands, said a spokeswoman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council on Wednesday.

Under the U.S. Biden administration alone, there have been 17 batches of arms sales to Taiwan so far and Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has launched two joint military drills surrounding the island of Taiwan this year.

When asked about the complicated situation, Zhu Fenglian, the spokeswoman, said at a press conference that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authority in Taiwan is entirely to blame for the current dire cross-Strait relations.

"The DPP authority has obstinately adhered to the separatist position of 'Taiwan independence' and intensified its provocation by colluding with external forces to seek 'Taiwan independence'. This is the root cause of the tension and turmoil in the relations across the Taiwan Strait. Everyone has seen that since Lai Ching-te became the leader of Taiwan region, he has vigorously proclaimed a new "two states" theory based on 'mutual non-subordination', deliberately undermined normal cross-Strait exchanges, attempted to seek 'Taiwan independence' by relying on the United States, constantly stoke antagonism and confrontation, pushing Taiwan towards the danger of military conflict. The United States repeatedly plays the 'Taiwan card' as well as insists on selling arms to Taiwan and arming the region, aiming to use Taiwan to contain China. It has repeatedly sent wrong signals to the 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces and encouraged the DPP authority to carry out risky and provocative acts for 'Taiwan independence'," said Zhu.

"We are always committed to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and promoting exchanges and cooperation between compatriots on both sides of the Strait. However, in the face of 'Taiwan independence' secession and foreign interference, China will not stand idly by. The measures we have taken are legitimate and necessary actions to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and protect the fundamental interests of compatriots on both sides of the Strait," she continued.

The 16th Beijing International Film Festival unfolded a "water red carpet" along a section of the Grand Canal in Tongzhou District, its sub-venue, on Friday night, when dazzling lights and illuminations brought the ancient waterway vividly to life.

The "water red carpet" stretched 3.3 kilometers on the canal, the world's longest and oldest man-made waterway spanning roughly 1,794 km, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. Five tour boats carried guests on the water, and after that they stepped onto a 100-meter red carpet along the waterfront.

Another highlight of the evening was the official premiere and maiden voyage of Journey on the Canal, a large-scale water spectacle performance that is part of activities held by the film festival's Tongzhou sub-venue.

With real scenes of the Grand Canal as the backdrop and stage, spectators from tour boats with panoramic ceilings enjoyed the 55-minute immersive performance that presents the canal's thousand-year history along a 3.5-kilometer stretch of the river.

Designed by renowned artist Han Meilin, the production features artistic installations in combination with advanced technology, including stunning water curtain projections, laser displays and dynamic lighting effects.

Tongzhou District, located in the southeast of Beijing, serves as the sub-center of the Chinese capital. The area is developing into a modern urban hub while preserving its rich Grand Canal heritage.

The festival is running from April 16 to 25.
