China and Nauru have made significant progress over the one year since the two countries resumed diplomatic relations, Chinese Ambassador to Nauru Lyu Jin said in an exclusive interview with CGTN in Nauru on Thursday.
On Jan 24, 2024, China and Nauru signed a joint communique on the resumption of diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level, which made Nauru the 183rd country to have diplomatic ties with China.
Lyu in the interview recalled the positive trajectory of China-Nauru relations since diplomatic ties were restored.
"The high-level exchanges between the two countries have been very frequent. Within just one year, Nauru's president, speaker, foreign minister, and all cabinet members have visited China, sharing governance experience and deepening mutual trust. Nauru consistently upholds the one-China principle and has vowed to support China's reunification on multiple occasions. Both sides are taking care of each other's core interests and major concerns and working closely together on multilateral issues. China has efficiently pushed forward its assistance and practical cooperation with Nauru, bringing the people of both countries closer as family," the ambassador said.
He then said that the two countries have developed genuine friendship and has set a strong foundation for the future.
"As President Xi Jinping said, 'There is no first or second in friendship. Once it begins, it will bring about a bright future. There is no big or small in cooperation. As long as it is sincere, it will deliver fruitful outcomes.' President Adeang also spoke at the 79th UN General Assembly that Nauru's restored diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China are a testament that even the largest and the smallest of countries can find common ground and work toward mutual benefit. Over the past year, both sides have found a bright path of genuine friendship and mutual support, setting a very good example of equality and cooperation between nations of all sizes," Lyu said.
