A Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy frigate formation recently carried out drills across multiple areas of the South China Sea, improving tactical coordination and joint operational capabilities under simulated wartime conditions.
Shortly after entering the training zone, the task force encountered a simulated missile attacks by "hostile aircraft". Radar operators detected incoming threats, prompting an immediate transition to combat readiness.
The frigate formation fired decoy rounds to create a protective screen, followed by smoke screens, while making high-speed evasive maneuvers to neutralize the mock missile threat.
As the drill progressed, the formation received new orders to adjust course and speed while intensifying surveillance for maritime targets.
Lookouts soon identified simulated floating mines blocking their way. All vessels opened fire, clearing the mines to secure a safe passage.
Subsequently, radar systems detected approaching "enemy ships." After analyzing target trajectories, the formation maneuvered into optimal firing positions and unleashed coordinated barrages by their main guns.
Over several days, the drills also included shipborne helicopter takeoff and landing, underway replenishment, and formation maneuvering exercises to enhance mission versatility.
"We adopted a high-intensity training model under real combat scenarios, emphasizing continuous drills and diversified tactical applications. By introducing unexpected challenges, we rigorously honed commanders' capability of making emergency decisions and the unit's endurance in prolonged operations," said Wang Zhibo, a PLA naval sailor.
