China urges the U.S. side to stop abusing the global supply chains to conduct malicious cyber activities, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday.
Guo made the remarks at a daily press conference in response to a report released by the China Cybersecurity Industry Alliance on the same day, which exposed the U.S. intelligence agencies' surveillance and data theft activities targeting global mobile smart terminals and communications.
"China has noted the relevant report, highlighting that the U.S. government has been abusing its monopoly advantage in information technology and upstream position in industrial and supply chains to carry out large-scale and long-term malicious cyber activities. These activities target mobile phones and the broader mobile industry ecosystem globally and can be characterized as pervasive and all-encompassing," said Guo.
"It is noteworthy that the report indicates that the U.S. is the leading country in carrying out cyber attacks through supply chains and mobile operators. For many years, the U.S. has been accustomed to these 'thief-crying-stop-thief' stunts on supply chain security issues, applying double standards, and going to great lengths to hype the so-called 5G supply chain security issues. At the same time, with the cooperation of its large Internet companies or equipment suppliers, the U.S. has pre-positioned access points into global information equipment products for its cyber attacks. I believe this report will help the international community recognize the true nature of the U.S.," he said.
"We are gravely concerned over the malicious cyber activities of the U.S. highlighted in the report and urge the U.S. to immediately stop these actions, particularly stop abusing the global supply chain to carry out malicious cyber activities, and give an explanation to the world in a responsible attitude," he said.
