The 2024 Beirut Marathon kicked off in the Lebanese capital on Thursday despite the country's escalating tensions with Israel, demonstrating the determination of the Lebanese people to move forward.
Originally scheduled for last November but postponed due to the conflict, the marathon drew thousands of runners from across Lebanon and various countries worldwide.
The marathon race, founded in 2003, winds through many of the city's landmarks, highlighting Beirut's resilience and vitality, as well as sending powerful messages of peace and hope.
"We are running here, continuing our life as it should be, forever. No matter what happens, this is our country. We love her, and we will never be abandoned by her," said a participant.
"I am thrilled since I have not participated in a marathon for a long time. Running in Beirut, the heart of Lebanon, also makes me excited. I am very happy that Beirut is going back to the way it was, and I believe it will only get better," said another participant.
Despite the postponement, the marathon proceeded smoothly and received widespread support, emphasizing the ability of sports to rise above politics and conflict, and embodying the Lebanese people's pursuit of unity and strength in adversity, according to the organizers.
Despite a ceasefire brokered by the United States and France between Hezbollah and Israel that has been in effect since Nov 27, 2024, the Israeli army continues to carry out near-daily strikes in Lebanon, claiming to be targeting Hezbollah "threats".
