Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Monday stressed that the country will remain committed to nuclear talks with the United States.
Speaking at a weekly press conference in the capital Tehran, the spokesman said Iran's principles and framework for participating in nuclear negotiations remain unchanged. Iran insists that the peaceful use of nuclear energy is its right and will continue to negotiate with the United States.
Baghaei said that the postponement of the fourth round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States is based on a proposal by the mediator, Oman, and all parties are awaiting Oman's subsequent arrangements.
He emphasized that Iran has the right to fulfill its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and its right to continue uranium enrichment within the framework. At the same time, Iran has demonstrated its willingness to continue dialogue through actions.
"Iran is willing to build mutual trust through negotiations and this is subject to the position and statement of the United States at the negotiating table. The threat posed by the (bellicose forces in the United States) against Iran will undoubtedly prompt the Iranian armed forces to spare no effort and stay on high alert against any aggression or adventurism. There is no doubt about it," he said.
In addition, he said that Oman will continue to coordinate the date of the next round of indirect talks with Washington. In the negotiations, Iran aims to uphold the peaceful development of its nuclear industry to meet its energy and economic needs. Simultaneously, Iran must ensure that the United States can effectively and efficiently lift sanctions on Iran to safeguard Iran's national interests.
The delegations of Iran and the United States have so far held three rounds of indirect negotiations with mediation from Oman. The first and third rounds were held in the Omani capital, Muscat, on April 12 and April 26, with the second one in Rome on April 19.
The fourth round, which was scheduled for May 3 in Rome, was postponed to an unspecified date owing to what Oman described as "logistical reasons."
