A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of National Defense on Thursday slammed Taiwan's regional leader Lai Ching-te for distorting World War II history in his recent remarks and attempting to equate the just history of anti-fascism and anti-aggression in World War II with the evil deeds of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in seeking to split the country.
Jiang Bin, the spokesperson, made the remarks at a press conference when asked to comment on a recent event held by DPP authorities marking the so-called "80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe" and Lai's remarks during the event at the site, which was once the governor's residence during the Japanese colonial period.
He also denounced the statements of Lai Ching-te as disgraceful betrayals of the nation.
"Lai Ching-te has been promoting dictatorship and 'green terror' on the island, inciting confrontation and hostility across the Taiwan Strait and leading to tension and instability in the Taiwan Strait. He is an unmitigated 'saboteur of peace' and a 'crisis maker' across the Taiwan Strait. To seize the spotlight and gain attention, Lai Ching-te shamelessly stood in a place where Japanese aggressors once trampled Taiwan, spreading deceiving fallacies, distorting World War II history, smuggling his 'Taiwan independence' fallacy. His betrayal of the nation is truly shameful," said Jiang.
"This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the World Anti-Fascist War and the restoration of Taiwan. The historical trend that China will and must achieve reunification is unstoppable. Any words or actions that forget the roots or seek secession with external support will face condemnation from the world and be judged by history," he continued.
