Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Wednesday hailed the Chinese people's victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression as an epic chapter in human history and a major contribution to the global fight against fascism, saying it helped advance the progress of human civilization.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
In an exclusive interview with China Media Group in Beijing, Petro spoke highly of the Chinese people's unbreakable spirit of heroic resistance and perseverance in the face of Japanese aggression.
"It was an epic in human history and not merely a chapter of the past. During World War II, 50 million people lost their lives in Europe. In the East, on the Asian battlefield, tens of millions of Chinese perished under Japanese aggression. That period of history bore witness to how a nation resisted foreign invasion through spiritual strength, moral resilience, and unyielding will -- forces more powerful than material strength," he said.
Petro noted that the victory of the Chinese people, together with those achieved in Europe, not only changed the destinies of their respective countries, but also marked a major step forward for humanity as a whole.
"The Chinese people launched a revolution to defeat fascism in Asia, just as the peoples of Europe triumphed over fascism on their own continent. A true revolution not only propels a nation from one historical stage to the next, but also reshapes the value system of all humanity. This is the essence of revolution -- it does not merely change the fate of a single nation, but marks progress for all humankind," said the president.
