Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday said that China stands ready to work with Germany to write a new chapter for the all-round strategic partnership between the two countries.

Speaking to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over phone, Xi said a healthy and stable China-Germany relationship serves the interests of both countries and meets the expectations of various sectors in China and Europe, at a time when the international landscape is fraught with instability and changes.

He again congratulated Merz on his taking office as the chancellor of Germany.

China and Germany have always developed relations in the spirit of mutual respect, seeking common ground while setting aside differences, and win-win cooperation, Xi stressed, adding that this fine tradition needs to be carefully nurtured and carried forward by both sides.

He called for both countries to consolidate political mutual trust, saying that China is ready to maintain close high-level exchanges with Germany.

The two countries should respect each other's core interests and build a more solid political foundation for bilateral ties, Xi said.

Xi urged joint efforts to strengthen cooperation in such traditional sectors as automobiles, mechanical manufacturing and chemical engineering.

The two countries should expand cooperation in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence and quantum technology, he continued.

He also called on both sides to enhance exchanges and collaboration in areas such as climate change and green development.

China is willing to share development opportunities with Germany brought about by China's high-level opening up, Xi said.

China hopes Germany will provide more policy support and facilitation for two-way investment cooperation and create a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises, said the president.

Xi said facts have fully proved that China and Germany as well as China and Europe should be rightly characterized as partners.

A stable and predictable policy environment provides important guarantee for China-Germany cooperation, and it is the common mission of both sides to assume their responsibilities as major countries, he said.

Noting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the EU, Xi called on the two sides to draw upon the best practices in the development of relations, uphold multilateralism and free trade, and deepen open and mutually beneficial cooperation.

Merz, speaking over phone, called China one of the most important countries in the world, adding that Germany-China ties have developed well and bilateral cooperation have produced fruitful outcomes.

Cooperation between Germany and China, two major economies in the world, is of particular importance under the current international situation, said the chancellor.

The new German government adheres to the one-China policy and is willing to promote greater development of the strategic partnership between the two countries in a constructive and pragmatic manner, Merz said.

He said Germany looks forward to working with China on strengthening exchanges and cooperation across various fields, committing to openness and mutual benefit, promoting fair trade, maintaining world peace, and jointly responding to global challenges such as climate change.

The healthy and steady development of EU-China relations is in the interests of both sides, Merz said, adding that Germany is willing to play an active role in this regard.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis.

Protests against federal immigration enforcement are spreading across the United States, with the latest demonstration unfolding directly in front of the White House.

Early Saturday, more than a hundred demonstrators gathered there, demanding changes to the Trump administration's immigration policies and accountability for recent shootings involving federal agents.

Immigrant rights and civil rights groups said this weekend's rallies mark a coordinated national response. Demonstrations are planned or already underway in major cities including Philadelphia, as well as across states such as North Carolina, Florida, Texas, and Washington, D.C., where organizers are calling for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to be removed from local communities.

The nationwide protests follow a deadly week in which three people were shot by federal agents in two days.

In Minneapolis, Minnesota, a 37-year-old woman, Renee Good, was killed during an enforcement operation by the ICE. A day later in Portland, Oregon, a man and a woman were wounded during a separate federal operation.

In the aftermath, Minnesota state officials accused the Trump administration of blocking their investigation by denying access to key evidence and prematurely drawing conclusions before a full review could be completed.

On Friday, Donald Trump defended the Department of Homeland Security's actions, sharply criticizing Minnesota leaders and calling them corrupt.

Local leaders have pushed back. During a Saturday news conference, the mayor of Minneapolis described ICE agents' actions as reckless.

Officials in both Minneapolis and Portland continue urging demonstrators to remain peaceful as protests intensify nationwide.

According to a 50501 Movement statement issued Friday, at least 32 people died in ICE custody in 2025.
