The cooperation with China in green energy, resources, and technology will help Kenya pursue future development, said William Ruto, the country's President in an interview as he pointed out the bilateral collaboration has already yielded many benefits for Kenya. Ruto made the remarks in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) aired on Friday. He said in the next phase, the Kenya-China cooperation will focus on the delivery of key transportation projects and the enhancement of digitalization in the country.
"The next frontier is going to be in the space of delivery of the Nairobi-Mau Summit Expressway or a dual carriageway that is going to enhance connectivity not just to central and western Kenya, but also to the region, the east African region, [and] the delivery around the digital superhighway that already is a program, that is underway, that will enhance digital footprint around Kenya. We are currently working on 1,450 digital hubs around Kenya," he said.
In a statement released last month by Kenya's Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, the country stressed that China is a vital partner, as Kenya bears impacts from a 10-percent U.S. tariff hike on key exports.
Pointing out that Kenya and China have strengthened cooperation across various fields, the ministry emphasized China's renewed support for Kenya's major infrastructure projects, including developing the Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit Highway and extending the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Malaba.
As Kenya is looking forward to more opportunities to strengthen partnership with China, Ruto noted that in his vision, the future cooperation between the two countries will focus on exploring the field of green energy.
"There is a lot of engagement with Chinese companies in unlocking our geothermal energy resources in different parts of Kenya, and we are very happy with the technology that the Chinese companies are providing. So, that is the future as I see it -- exploring opportunities for leveraging on green technology and green resources and green energy to take the country into the future," he said.
