The United States will see an 8.7-percent decline in international arrivals for the year of 2025, due to various factors including the U.S. government trade policies, data from Oxford Economics suggested.

The steepest drops are expected from Canada, Mexico, and Western European nations, decreasing by 20.2 percent, 7.6 percent, and 5.8 percent respectively, predicted Oxford Economics, an economic advisory firm.

This downward trend could result in an 8.5 billion reduction in international tourist spending in the U.S. this year, a 4.7-percent decrease compared to the previous year, according to the data.

Additionally, airline ticket bookings for travel to the U.S. from May to July have fallen by 10.8 percent compared to the same period last year, indicating a broader hesitancy among global travelers, said the data.

The drop in visitor numbers is caused by negative sentiment generated by recent U.S. policy decisions, analysts said. Among these are immigration concerns, with reports of tourists being detained at the borders deterring travelers from visiting the country.

The inbound travel to the U.S. from overseas origins in March dropped nearly 12 percent year on year, marking a decline two percentage points greater than February's, according to data from the U.S. International Trade Administration that was released in April.

Tourism plays a crucial role in the U.S. economy, contributing nine percent of its GDP, creating 20 million jobs, and generating roughly seven percent of total government tax revenue, the World Travel and Tourism Council recently said.

With growing numbers of international tourists choosing to avoid the country, the impact on the U.S. travel industry could be severe, particularly for major tourist cities and regions bordering Canada.
