If the United States sincerely hopes for maintaining peace across the Taiwan Strait, it should draw a clear line with and unequivocally oppose Taiwan separatism, said Chen Binhua, spokesman of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday.

Chen made the remarks when asked to comment on an article in the U.S. magazine Foreign Affairs which suggested that the United States should clarify its position against Taiwan separatism, including publicly criticizing the claims and actions of the Taiwan regional leader that imply Taiwan separatism.

"Recently, an increasing number of foreign experts and scholars have openly expressed concerns and criticisms regarding Lai Ching-te's provocative actions related to Taiwan separatism, which they perceive as a threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We express appreciation for these rational voices and hope that more insightful individuals will recognize the fundamental reason for the current complex and severe situation in the Taiwan Strait. The root cause is the Democratic Progressive Party authorities' refusal to recognize the 1992 Consensus, which embodies the one-China principle, and their stubborn adherence to the Taiwan separatism stance and continuously colluding with external forces to pursue separatist provocations," Chen pointed out.

"Taiwan separatism is as incompatible with peace in the Taiwan Strait as fire with water. The U.S. side should abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiques, and unequivocally oppose Taiwan separatism. From the standpoint of national righteousness and their own well-being, we hope that the vast majority of Taiwan compatriots resolutely oppose the separatist activities and external interference, and join hands with us to maintain peace and stability across the Strait," he said.

Protesters filled Mexico City's Paseo de la Reforma on Saturday, rallying in solidarity with Venezuela and denouncing U.S. influence in Latin America.

The United States launched a large-scale military operation against Venezuela in the early hours of Jan 3, taking by force Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

Holding numerous flags and banners while chanting slogans intermittently, a huge crowd of protesters criticized U.S. military actions against Venezuela and the unlawful control over President Maduro and his spouse, calling for respect for national sovereignty and regional peace.

"We oppose the U.S. intervention and hegemony towards the countries in Latin America. The United States has flagrantly trampled on international law, bombed Caracas and kidnapped the Maduro couple. The U.S. interventionism has become extremely blatant. We must firmly oppose and be highly vigilant, because this is not only related to a certain country, but also to all countries," said a protester.

"We demand that the United States stop interfering in Venezuela's internal affairs. The country must immediately cease its exploitation and plundering of the countries in Latin America," said another protester.
