Senior officials from Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states called for deepened collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI) and its application on Thursday, to steer AI toward beneficial, safe and equitable development.

The 2025 China-SCO AI Cooperation Forum, themed "Intelligence Converges in China, Wisdom Benefits SCO," brought together officials and experts from the AI industry and academia to discuss AI governance and practical applications.

Chinese officials pledged at the forum to build AI collaboration platforms to deepen technological sharing with member states.

An official from the Kyrgyz government highlighted the practical benefits brought by open source Chinese AI solutions.

"At present, a private enterprise in our country is using the open solutions of Chinese AI enterprises to develop large language models of our own, which can significantly narrow the digital divide between us and developed countries," said Azat Ibraimov, Director of the Situation Center for Management and Monitoring of the Implementation of Decisions of the President and the Cabinet of Ministers.

Azizjon Azimi, chairman of the Artificial Intelligence Council under the Tajik Ministry of Industry and New Technologies, said that there is huge potential in the possible combination between frontier Chinese AI models and Tajikistan's green hydropower resources.

"I think what makes us startled in positive sense by China's development and deployment of artificial intelligence is the scale. There is much room to grow in, you can marry the most frontier AI models that China is producing, with Tajikistan's green hydro potential. We think that what makes your approach very unique in China is the fact that you have very strong local research and development," he said.

"We have dozens of channels for cooperation, including education, economy, transportation and logistics, new technologies and health," said Oleg Kopylov, deputy secretary-general of the SCO.

The event jointly organized by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the Tianjin Municipal People's Government, aims to boost practical AI development and governance cooperation between China and SCO member states.

Protesters filled Mexico City's Paseo de la Reforma on Saturday, rallying in solidarity with Venezuela and denouncing U.S. influence in Latin America.

The United States launched a large-scale military operation against Venezuela in the early hours of Jan 3, taking by force Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

Holding numerous flags and banners while chanting slogans intermittently, a huge crowd of protesters criticized U.S. military actions against Venezuela and the unlawful control over President Maduro and his spouse, calling for respect for national sovereignty and regional peace.

"We oppose the U.S. intervention and hegemony towards the countries in Latin America. The United States has flagrantly trampled on international law, bombed Caracas and kidnapped the Maduro couple. The U.S. interventionism has become extremely blatant. We must firmly oppose and be highly vigilant, because this is not only related to a certain country, but also to all countries," said a protester.

"We demand that the United States stop interfering in Venezuela's internal affairs. The country must immediately cease its exploitation and plundering of the countries in Latin America," said another protester.
