More than 50,000 children in Gaza have been killed or injured since October 2023, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said in a post on X on Monday, citing data from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
"According to UNICEF, 50,000 boys and girls have been killed or injured in just 20 months," UNRWA said in its post.
"Civilians, including children, humanitarian and medical workers, first responders, and journalists, continue to be killed and injured in the Gaza Strip. No one is safe, no one is spared, no place is safe in Gaza," said the agency.
Releasing the grim child casualty figure in an article on May 27, UNICEF said children in Gaza are suffering "a long, harrowing list of unimaginable horrors: the grave violations against children, the blockade of aid, the starvation, the constant forced displacement, and the destruction of hospitals, water systems, schools, and homes."
"The children of Gaza need protection. They need food, water, and medicine. They need a ceasefire. But more than anything, they need immediate, collective action to stop this once and for all," said UNICEF.
