China has strongly condemned recent U.S. actions halting ethane exports and imposing new restrictions, calling them retaliatory and harmful to mutual trade commitments.

At a press conference in Beijing on Thursday, He Yongqian, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the recent U.S. suspension of ethane exports to China and other measures reportedly taken in response to China's rare earth export controls.

"Rare earths and related items have clear dual-use attributes for both civilian and military purposes. Implementing export controls on such items is a common international practice. The Chinese government reviews export license applications for dual-use items in accordance with laws and regulations. For applications that meet the required conditions, China will grant approval to promote lawful and compliant trade," said the spokesperson.

"Following the release of the Joint Statement on China-U.S. Economic and Trade Meeting in Geneva on May 12, China has approached the matter responsibly, taken it seriously, fully honored its obligations, and actively worked to uphold the consensus reached during the Geneva talks. In contrast, the U.S. has taken a series of restrictive measures against China after the talks, actions that severely undermine the existing consensus and seriously infringe upon China's legitimate rights and interests. China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition, and calls on the U.S. to immediately cease these wrongful actions. If the U.S. insists on going its own way and continues to harm China's interests, China will resolutely take strong measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests," she said.

The U.S. share of global GDP under President Donald Trump has fallen to its lowest level since 1980, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported on Saturday.

RIA Novosti said data from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund show that U.S. purchasing power parity sank to 14.65 percent last year.

That's compared to an average of 14.93 percent during former President Joe Biden's four years in office.
