Story hits 2-run homer, Crochet goes 6 strong innings as Red Sox earn series victory over Mariners

SEATTLE (AP) — Trevor Story hit a two-run home run and Garrett Crochet pitched six innings of one-run ball as the Boston Red Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1 on Wednesday.

Story went below the strike zone to get a hold of a sinker from Mariners starter Luis Castillo (4-5) in the fourth inning and deposited it beyond the wall in left-center field to break a 1-1 tie.

The Red Sox took two of three from the Mariners.

ROCKIES 3, NATIONALS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michael Toglia and Jordan Beck hit solo homers and Germán Márquez gave up six hits in 5 2/3 scoreless innings to help Colorado beat Washington, extending the Nationals’ losing streak to 11 games.

The Rockies have won four straight games for the first time this season.

Toglia’s home run off starter Mitchell Parker (4-8) made it 1-0 in the sixth and Orlando Arcia led off the seventh with a triple and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Ritter to make it 2-0.

CJ Abrams drew a two-out walk in the seventh and scored on James Wood’s 19th double of the season.

Seth Halvorsen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts for his fifth save of the season.

PHILLIES 4, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) — Bryson Stott hit a three-run homer, Ranger Suárez pitched seven effective innings and Philadelphia beat Miami.

Suárez (6-1) permitted one run and four hits in another solid performance since his return from an early season back injury. He struck out eight and walked two.

The veteran left-hander has only allowed eight runs since giving up seven in his first start of the season on May 4.

Stott capped Philadelphia’s four-run fourth inning against Adam Mazur (0-1) with his fifth homer of the season. J.T. Realmuto hit an RBI single before Stott drove a first-pitch fastball deep to center.

Mazur struck out five and allowed five hits in 5 2/3 innings in his Marlins debut. He was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville.

ANGELS 3, YANKEES 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered in the second inning to end New York’s 30-inning scoreless streak, but an error in the eighth inning gave Los Angeles a tiebreaking run, and the Angels beat the Yankees for their sixth straight loss.

Mike Trout and Taylor Ward opened the eighth by drawing walks off Fernando Cruz (1-3), and Luis Rengifo walked on four pitches to load the bases. Jo Adell hit a 105.9-mph grounder to New York shortstop Anthony Volpe, who bobbled the ball and threw wide of second, allowing Trout to score.

The Yankees lost for the eighth time in 18 games, and their losing streak is the longest since they lost nine straight from Aug. 12-23, 2023.

Chisholm ended New York’s longest run-scoring drought since a 33-inning skid Sept. 22-25, 2016, when his drive down the right field line stayed inside the foul pole and tied the game at 1

BLUE JAYS 8, DIAMONDBACKS 1

TORONTO (AP) — Bo Bichette had a home run among his three hits, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reached base five times and drove in three and Toronto beat Arizona.

Addison Barger had three hits and a walk, and left-hander Eric Lauer (3-1) pitched five innings to help Toronto improve to 24-13 at home.

Guerrero walked in his first three plate appearances, including an intentional pass in the third. He hit a two-run double in the sixth and singled home a run in the seventh.

Arizona arrived in Toronto having won five of six but lost its third straight, its longest skid since losing three in a row in late May.

REDS 4. TWINS 2. 6 INNINGS

CINCINNATI (AP) — Spencer Steer hit a two-run home run and Nick Lodolo allowed two runs on three hits in five innings to help Cincinnati beat Minnesota in a game called in the sixth inning because of rain.

The start was delayed two hours and seven minutes by severe weather. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, rain returned and the game was called after a 53-minute delay.

The Reds have won four straight and nine of their last 12 games to climb within one game of the third NL wild-card spot. They are a season high four games above .500 at 39-35.

Byron Buxton’s 11th career leadoff homer put the Twins ahead 1-0. It was his second leadoff homer this season, and first since May 4 at Boston.

BRAVES 5, METS 0

ATLANTA (AP) — Chris Sale went 8 2/3 innings just missing his first shutout since 2019, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson hit home runs, and Atlanta handed New York their season-high fifth straight loss.

Sale (5-4) allowed five hits and one walk. He struck out seven and did not allow a runner past second base. He threw 116 pitches before giving way to Raisel Iglesias, who got a groundout to end the game.

Sale has given up four runs in his last 41 2/3 innings for a 0.86 ERA in his last six starts.

Olson hit his 15th home run of the season in the seventh inning. Ozzie Albies was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple. Albies was hit in the right knee with a pitch while swinging at a third strike and went down for a few moments in the sixth inning, but stayed in the game.

RAYS 12, ORIOLES 8

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Brandon Lowe hit a tying two-run homer in the fifth inning and Tampa Bay overcame an eight-run deficit to beat Baltimore in the largest comeback in the majors this season.

Junior Camerino had four hits and two RBIs to help Tampa Bay match the biggest comeback in franchise history. The Rays also rallied from eight down in a 10-8 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 18, 2012, and in a 10-9 win over Toronto on July 25, 2009.

The Orioles last gave away an eight-run lead on April 28, 2017 in a 14-11 loss to the New York Yankees. The largest blown lead in franchise history came in a 14-13 loss to Detroit on April 25, 1901, when the team was based in Milwaukee.

Baltimore had an eight-run second inning. Colton Cowser hit a three-run homer, Cedric Mullins added a solo shot, Gunnar Henderson had an RBI single and Laureano hit another three-run homer.

ROYALS 6, RANGERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Maikel Garcia homered and drove in four runs, helping Kansas City beat Texas.

Garcia capped Kansas City’s four-run third inning with a three-run drive for his career-best eighth homer. He also tripled in Bobby Witt Jr. in the eighth.

Garcia’s three hits matched a season high, and his four RBIs equaled a career best.

The Royals have taken the first two in their three-game set at Texas following an 0-6 homestand that matched their longest losing streak of the season.

GUARDIANS 4, GIANTS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Daniel Schneeman hit a three-run home run to keep Justin Verlander winless in a San Francisco uniform, powering Cleveland to a victory over the Giants.

Verlander (0-4) allowed four runs (three earned) in 4 2/3 innings after being activated off the Injured List earlier in the day. The nine-time All-Star gave up seven hits and had six strikeouts in his first start since May 18.

Kyle Manzardo doubled twice and Jose Ramirez added an RBI-single to help the Guardians clinch their first series win in San Francisco since 2005. Heliot Ramos homered for the Giants.

Logan Allen (5-4) gave up two runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings to get the win for the Guardians.

DODGERS 4, PADRES 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Will Smith hit a tiebreaking home run in the bottom of the ninth, lifting Los Angeles over San Diego.

The Padres tied the game at 3 in the top of the inning on Jake Cronenworth’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly off reliever Justin Wrobleski (2-2) and Xander Bogaerts’ RBI double to center.

Smith connected on a 90 mph changeup from closer Robert Suarez (1-3) for the Dodgers’ 25th comeback win of the season.

After four players were hit by pitches in the first two games of the series and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was ejected on Tuesday, Andy Pages was hit on his left shoulder by a 91 mph cutter by Stephen Kolek in the seventh. Pages was plunked by Padres starter Dylan Cease on Monday.

With the umpires watching, Kolek and Pages exchanged nods as Kolek left the game one out later.

The first-place Dodgers won their fifth in a row and improved to 5-1 against the Padres.

ASTROS 11, ATHLETICS 4

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Jose Altuve and Victor Caratini hit three-run home runs in a seven-run sixth inning and Houston had a season-high 20 hits in a victory over the Athletics.

Framber Valdez (8-4) limited the A’s to two runs and five hits in six innings to help the Astros win for the seventh time in eight games.

Altuve, Caratini. Jeremy Peña. Cam Smith and Jake Meyers had three hits apiece, and Yandy Diaz and Mauricio Dubón each added two.

Nick Kurtz hit a double and scored on a single by Austin Wynns to give the Athletics a 1-0 lead in the second. The 22-year-old rookie had a solo homer in the ninth.

NUUK, Greenland (AP) — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that NATO should help the U.S. acquire Greenland and anything less than American control is unacceptable, hours before Vice President JD Vance was to host Danish and Greenlandic officials for talks.

In a post on his social media site, Trump reiterated his argument that the U.S. “needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security.” He added that “NATO should be leading the way for us to get it” and that otherwise Russia or China would — “AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!”

“NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES,” Trump wrote. “Anything less than that is unacceptable.”

Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark, is at the center of a geopolitical storm as Trump insists he wants to own it — and residents of its capital, Nuuk, say it isn't for sale. The White House hasn't ruled out taking the Arctic island by force.

Vance is to meet Denmark’s foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and his Greenlandic counterpart Vivian Motzfeldt in Washington later Wednesday to discuss Greenland.

Along the narrow, snow-covered main street in Nuuk, international journalists and camera crews have been stopping passersby every few meters (feet) asking them for their thoughts on a crisis which Denmark’s prime minister has warned could potentially trigger the end of NATO.

Tuuta Mikaelsen, a 22-year-old student, told The Associated Press in Nuuk that she hoped American officials would get the message to “back off."

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen told a news conference in Copenhagen on Tuesday that "if we have to choose between the United States and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark. We choose NATO. We choose the Kingdom of Denmark. We choose the EU.”

Asked later Tuesday about Nielsen's comments, Trump replied: “I disagree with him. I don’t know who he is. I don’t know anything about him. But, that’s going to be a big problem for him.”

Greenland is strategically important because, as climate change causes the ice to melt, it opens up the possibility of shorter trade routes to Asia. That also could make it easier to extract and transport untapped deposits of critical minerals which are needed for computers and phones.

Trump said in Wednesday's post that Greenland is “vital” to the United States' Golden Dome missile defense program. He also has said he wants the island to expand America’s security and has cited what he says is the threat from Russian and Chinese ships as a reason to control it.

But both experts and Greenlanders question that claim.

“The only Chinese I see is when I go to the fast food market,” heating engineer Lars Vintner said. He said he frequently goes sailing and hunting and has never seen Russian or Chinese ships.

His friend, Hans Nørgaard, agreed, adding “what has come out of the mouth of Donald Trump about all these ships is just fantasy.”

Denmark has said the U.S. — which already has a military presence — can boost its bases on Greenland. For that reason, “security is just a cover,” Vintner said, suggesting Trump actually wants to own the island to make money from its untapped natural resources.

Nørgaard said he filed a police complaint in Nuuk against Trump’s “aggressive” behavior because, he said, American officials are threatening the people of Greenland and NATO.

Mikaelsen, the student, said Greenlanders benefit from being part of Denmark, which provides free health care, education and payments during study, and “I don’t want the U.S. to take that away from us."

Following the White House meeting, Løkke Rasmussen and Motzfeldt, along with Denmark’s ambassador to the U.S., are due to meet with senators from the Arctic Caucus in the U.S. Congress.

Two lawmakers — Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a New Hampshire Democrat, and Sen. Lisa Murkowski, an Alaska Republican — have introduced bipartisan legislation that would prohibit the use of funds from the U.S. Defense or State departments to annex or take control of Greenland or the sovereign territory of any NATO member state without that ally’s consent or authorization from the North Atlantic Council.

A bipartisan delegation of lawmakers is also heading to Copenhagen at the end of the week to meet with Danish and Greenlandic officials.

Last week, Denmark’s major European allies joined Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in issuing a statement declaring that Greenland belongs to its people and that “it is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland.”

On Wednesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot told RTL radio that his country plans to open a consulate in Greenland on Feb. 6, following a decision last summer to open the diplomatic outpost.

“Attacking another NATO member would make no sense; it would even be contrary to the interests of the United States. And I’m hearing more and more voices in the United States saying this,” Barrot said. “So this blackmail must obviously stop.”
