China urges Russia, Ukraine to maintain momentum for peace talks

China calls on Russia and Ukraine to sustain the momentum for peace talk, said Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, at a UN Security Council meeting on the Ukraine issue on Friday.

China stands ready to work with the international community to continue playing a constructive role in facilitating an early political settlement to the crisis, said Geng.

The Chinese representative noted that the second round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul had yielded consensus on issues of exchanging fallen soldiers' remains, repatriating severely wounded soldiers, and helping reunite displaced children with their families. China welcomes these positive developments.

Geng stressed that the end point of any conflict is the negotiating table. China encourages the parties concerned to maintain contact, continue dialog, and demonstrate political will and flexibility to reach a fair, lasting, and binding peace agreement acceptable to all sides.

"We need to create favorable conditions. The international community should amplify rational calls for ceasefire, peace talks, and political settlement, and intensify diplomatic efforts to build trust and mediate, creating a positive atmosphere for an early political settlement of the crisis. In this regard, we urge the United States to focus on diplomatic solutions and refrain from groundless accusations," said Geng.
