Chinese Ambassador to Comoros Guo Zhijun was decorated Saturday by Comorian President Azali Assoumani for his contributions to the bilateral relationship.

Guo, who was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Union of Comoros in January 2023, concluded his tenure on Tuesday.

Ahead of his departure, President Assoumani held a ceremony, bestowing the title of Commander of the Order of the Green Crescent, one of the country's highest distinctions, upon the Chinese ambassador, in recognition of his contributions to China-Comoros relations.

The ceremony was attended by members of the Comorian government, parliamentarians, as well as representatives of the diplomatic mission.

In his speech, President Assoumani highlighted that this honor came at a particularly meaningful moment, the 50th anniversary of Comoros' independence, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the country's establishment of diplomatic ties with China.

The president also emphasized that the bilateral relationship between China and Comoros is based on mutual respect, solidarity, and shared development, noting China's support for his country, including the construction of the People's Palace, as well as infrastructural projects of hospitals and roads.

He also recalled China's support during the COVID-19 pandemic, a testament to the genuine friendship between the two countries.

These ties, he noted, have grown even stronger in the past year through continued cooperation with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Guo's endeavor to promote the relationship between the two countries has seen great effect, he said.

"On behalf of the government and people of Comoros, and on my own behalf, I would like to reiterate our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to you for putting your commitment, dynamism, and vast personal experience at the service of cooperation between our two countries. We hope that your successor will be able to continue the work you have accomplished in our country. Mr. Ambassador, in our tradition, we do not say farewell to a brother and friend who is leaving, we simply say see you next time," he said.

Guo also expressed his appreciation and best wishes to the Comoros government.

"Thank you for your attention and your active efforts to develop relations between China and Comoros. Thank you for your support for my mission in the Comoros. Thank you for your trust and support for Chinese companies and institutes," said Guo.

Protesters filled Mexico City's Paseo de la Reforma on Saturday, rallying in solidarity with Venezuela and denouncing U.S. influence in Latin America.

The United States launched a large-scale military operation against Venezuela in the early hours of Jan 3, taking by force Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

Holding numerous flags and banners while chanting slogans intermittently, a huge crowd of protesters criticized U.S. military actions against Venezuela and the unlawful control over President Maduro and his spouse, calling for respect for national sovereignty and regional peace.

"We oppose the U.S. intervention and hegemony towards the countries in Latin America. The United States has flagrantly trampled on international law, bombed Caracas and kidnapped the Maduro couple. The U.S. interventionism has become extremely blatant. We must firmly oppose and be highly vigilant, because this is not only related to a certain country, but also to all countries," said a protester.

"We demand that the United States stop interfering in Venezuela's internal affairs. The country must immediately cease its exploitation and plundering of the countries in Latin America," said another protester.
