E&M I&T Day 2025 held

The E&M I&T Day 2025, organised by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) and the Guangdong Association for Science and Technology, and co-organised by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, was held at the Hong Kong Science Park today (June 26).

The E&M I&T Day 2025, themed "Green Productive Forces: Empowering Smart and Green E&M, Driving New Quality Development", comprised seminars and exhibitions, providing the trade with a platform for interactive exchanges and experience sharing on the application of innovation and technology (I&T) in decarbonisation and optimisation of electrical and mechanical services.

Delivering an opening speech by video, the Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr Tse Chin-wan, said that in order to align with the country's dual carbon targets, the Government will continue to implement the four major decarbonisation strategies, namely net-zero electricity generation, energy saving and green buildings, green transport and waste reduction, and will also support innovation and technology projects through the Green Tech Fund. The Government will also actively deepen co-operation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to promote technological innovation, continue to leverage on the distinctive advantages of enjoying strong support of the motherland and being closely connected to the world to serve as a demonstration platform for green productive forces and to promote sustainable development and international co-operation.

The Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, Mr Poon Kwok-ying, said in his welcoming speech that being the innovation facilitator of the Government, the EMSD is committed to supporting various departments in applying new technologies to enhance services. Through close collaboration with the trade and the academia, the EMSD also assists various departments in pursuing goals such as smart cities and low-carbon transition, thereby promoting the development of new quality productive forces. Mr Poon also said that the EMSD will play an active role to serve as a "super connector" and "super value-adder" worldwide to promote the I&T achievements of the GBA.

The E&M I&T Day 2025 brought together 28 Hong Kong and Mainland exhibitors, and attracted over 400 participants from sectors including I&T, the electrical and mechanical trade, post-secondary education and public organisations from the GBA, as well as more than 100 000 viewers for the online live streaming.

HAD opens temporary cold shelters

In view of the cold weather, the Home Affairs Department has opened 18 temporary cold shelters in various districts today (January 10) for people in need of the service. The temporary shelters will remain open when the Cold Weather Warning is in force.

Clean mattresses and blankets/quilts, hot meals and hot water will be provided to shelter users free of charge during the opening of the temporary shelters.

To ensure that cold shelter users can rest in a quiet and undisturbed environment, members of the public or agencies wishing to make donations to shelter users are requested to register with the staff of the shelter first. Donors will then be directed to place the donated items at a specified indoor location. The staff will help notify the shelter users to collect the items on their own.

Anyone seeking temporary refuge, or those with any questions about the donation arrangements at the cold shelters, may call the department's hotline 25728427 for more information.
