China's economic progress serves as a role model for other Global South countries to follow suit, said Ousmane Sonko, Prime Minister of Senegal.

In an interview with China Media Group (CMG) released on Friday, Sonko, who was in China for the 2025 Summer Davos, noted that all countries deserve equal treatment and respect, and emphasized the need for cooperative efforts to address global challenges.

"As you have mentioned, these are global challenges, yet their impact varies from country to country. Developing countries like ours tend to suffer more during crises compared with developed economies such as the United States or the European Union. Humankind periodically faces such transitions throughout history, and we find ourselves in one of those moments now. All continents, peoples and nations must commit to realigning themselves and not to stand in the way of the inevitable wave of change. It is crucial that international relations are founded on rules and mutual respect, regardless of a country's size, strength or capacity," said Sonko.

"These rules should be based on balance and reciprocity, while also adhering to the principle of multilateralism, which involves mutually agreed-upon regulations through discussion. For example, the trade rules set by the World Trade Organization should be uniformly applied to all member states. No party should attempt to condemn or alter the rules simply because the rules no longer serve its interests or because it perceives a loss of power and advantage," he said.

The prime minister also noted China's economic progress, which has empowered Global South to lead global economic growth.

"With the current reshaping of the global landscape, it is essential for the Global South to remain resolute, serve as the engine of global economic growth, and become the backbone of global growth with China at the forefront. We congratulate China on its remarkable progress achieved in such a short period of time, which is closely tied to its strong organization, discipline and determination. China stands as a role model for other Global South countries," he said.

The three-day 2025 Summer Davos Forum, held in north China's Tianjin Municipality in late June, attracted over 1,700 influential figures from more than 90 countries and regions to discuss how entrepreneurship and emerging technologies can unlock dynamic and resilient economies.

The U.S. share of global GDP under President Donald Trump has fallen to its lowest level since 1980, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported on Saturday.

RIA Novosti said data from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund show that U.S. purchasing power parity sank to 14.65 percent last year.

That's compared to an average of 14.93 percent during former President Joe Biden's four years in office.
