As the critical July 9 deadline nears for U.S.-EU trade talks, German experts have strongly criticized Washington’s erratic tariffs, warning of their destabilizing effects on the global economy, disrupted supply chains, and risks to key sectors such as steel.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has underscored the importance of achieving a constructive resolution, describing the negotiations as "a matter of vital European interest."
Across Germany, there is widespread criticism of the United States’ shifting positions, which many argue undermine trust and hinder international cooperation.
"The German industry has in fact lost trust in U.S. economic policy. Since President Trump took office, we have seen weekly announcements that create immense uncertainty. American citizens will be the first to bear the consequences, and of course, so will our own people. In sectors such as steel, for instance, German workers are already facing severe pressure on employment. We must find countermeasures to encourage the U.S. back onto a path of rational cooperation. If left with no other option, Europe will have to respond in kind," said Peter Nussbaum, chairman of the World Economic Council (WEC)-International Economic Senate (IWS). Meanwhile, German public opinion reflects growing unease over U.S. unilateralism, condemning its disruptive impact on global supply chains and long-term business strategies.
"The entire U.S. tariff strategy has shaken the foundations of global economic stability. And it's not just Germany, the whole world is dealing with the consequences. No one can make reliable predictions anymore. If the U.S. stays on this course, the result will be a lose-lose situation for everyone. I hope we all, including the Americans, can draw the same conclusion that this path only wrecks the global economy and does nothing for long-term growth or prosperity," said Felix Kurz, a German journalist.
