China has seen further consolidation of the foundation for food, energy, industry and national defense security during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), Zheng Shanjie, head of the National Development and Reform Commission, said on Wednesday.
Zheng made the statement when briefing on China's major achievements in socioeconomic development during the five-year period at a press conference in Beijing.
"In terms of grain production, we have supported the development and upgrading of 30.67 million hectares of high-standard farmland during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. So far we have developed over 66.7 million hectares of high-standard farmland, which is equivalent to the combined land area of the top two grain-producing provinces of Heilongjiang and Henan. China's food supply remains firmly in our own hands," Zheng said.
High-standard farmland, also called well-facilitated farmland, requires sci-tech support for disaster prevention and control, soil quality and fertility improvement, and farmland management based on information technology.
"As for energy, we have built the world's largest power infrastructure system, with the installed power generation capacity accounting for one third of the global total. Even during the peak periods of power consumption, such as summer and winter, power supply for residential needs and corporate needs can be ensured," Zheng said.
"In terms of industrial infrastructure, China has the world's largest manufacturing system with the most complete range of industrial categories. With continued improvement of the resilience and security of our industrial and supply chains, we are more confident in coping with various risks and challenges. At the same time, we have enhanced our national defense capabilities and economic strength, and have kept promoting our strategic capabilities for defending China's sovereignty, security and development interests," he said.
