Greater BRICS cooperation pursues peace and just, equitable global governance, which will create high-quality development opportunities for Global South countries, says a China Media Group (CMG) commentary issued on Tuesday.

An edited English-language version of the commentary is as follows: China, at the BRICS Summit 2025 in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, put forward a three-point proposal for safeguarding world peace and tranquility, bolstering the driving forces of economic growth, and promoting exchange and mutual learning among civilizations, with the announcement of multiple measures to support BRICS cooperation and development of the Global South, sparking heated discussions in the international community.

In recent years, China and other BRICS countries have been actively working for peace. Last year, China proposed building a BRICS committed to peace which will serve as a champion of common security. At the summit, China emphasized that BRICS countries need to stand up for what is right, speak up for justice, work to promote dispute settlement by peaceful means, and seek solutions that address the root causes based on the true merits of issues. This helps BRICS countries play a constructive role in resolving international hotspot issues and serve as a positive and stable force for good in the world.

Faced with the challenges of economic downturn, the world imperatively needs to find new growth engines. Meanwhile, efforts to break new ground have become a highlight of greater BRICS cooperation. At the summit, China announced it will establish the China-BRICS New Quality Productive Forces Research Center.

China proposed to expand cooperation in emerging fields such as the digital economy and the green economy and forge a "Digital South" brand within the framework of the Global Development Initiative, pledging to hold 200 digital economy and artificial intelligence training programs for Global South countries in the next five years. These practical measures will not only inject new impetus into greater BRICS cooperation, but also help the Global South countries strengthen their digital technology capabilities and seize a new round of development opportunities.

As the world's most important solidarity and cooperation platform for emerging markets and developing countries, BRICS is not only a primary channel for strengthening solidarity and cooperation among Global South nations, but also a vanguard for advancing global governance reform. At the summit, China urged progress in the World Bank's equity review and the International Monetary Fund's quota share adjustment. The meeting also voiced support for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including the Security Council.

From the adoption of a statement on AI global governance to the passing of a framework declaration on climate finance that urges developed countries to fulfill their obligations of providing financial support, these outcomes of the summit will make global governance more just and equitable.
