Emergency efforts are underway to grapple with severe rainfall events in both the capital Beijing and the southwestern metropolis Chongqing, prompting swift responses to minimize the impact of flooding, landslides and other rain-induced disasters.
Beijing on Thursday saw a fresh round of heavy rainfall.
According to the Beijing meteorological service, as of 08:00 on Thursday, heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm has drenched central Beijing and parts of the city's southwestern and northern districts, with the southwestern district of Fangshan recording over 100mm of precipitation -- reaching severe rainstorm levels.
Authorities have issued warnings for potential secondary disasters in mountainous and shallow mountain areas, including flash floods, mudslides, and landslides. Low-lying areas are also at risk of water accumulation, and members of the public are urged to remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, since Monday, Chongqing Municipality has been battered by continuous downpours.
In Juliang Village of Changshou District, heavy rain triggered over 10 landslides along riverside roads. Local officials quickly responded by clearing debris and issuing safety alerts to passing vehicles and residents.
One culvert in the area was blocked by stones and weeds, causing the floodwater to overflow onto nearby roads.
"Next, we will organize professional personnel to clear all the blocked culverts, to ensure that the floodwater will not damage roads and that pedestrians will be safe," said Li Jijun, head of the local industrial development service center.
In Jiangjin District, flooding along the Sunxi River was worsened due to sustained rainfall and upstream inflows. The water levels recorded by the local Caijia monitoring station have remained above the alert threshold since Wednesday.
Several townships, including Caijia and Zhongshan, have been inundated, with local governments deploying emergency teams to evacuate residents and protect property.
