U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to impose up to 50 percent tariffs on Brazilian exports has drawn widespread criticism among local citizens in the country.

Trump announced on Wednesday that a 50 percent tariff will be charged on goods imported from Brazil, effective on August 1.

Brazilian media have criticized the tariff hike as a politically motivated move, arguing that it unfairly targets Brazil, which is one of the few countries with which the U.S. has a trade surplus. They argued that such measures are an ineffective way to address the U.S. trade deficit.

Many Brazilian citizens have also expressed frustration with the U.S. government's decision, which they believe is detrimental to their economy and national sovereignty.

"This is completely unfair to Brazil. It's hard to believe that in today's world, on this day, a U.S. President could make such an irresponsible decision. It may harm not only the American people but also create animosity with other nations," said a resident in Sao Paulo.

"What the U.S. has done is unfair to Brazil, as it violates our sovereignty. I believe Brazil is a sovereign nation, and the Brazilian people will not accept any form of external threat," said another Sao Paulo resident.

Trump announced new tariffs on 14 countries on Monday and seven others on Wednesday, with rates varying from 20 percent to 40 percent. The latest announcement of a 50 percent tariff on Brazil is the highest so far in this round.

The central parity rate of the Chinese currency renminbi, or the yuan, strengthened 20 pips to 7.0108 against the U.S. dollar Monday, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System.

In China's spot foreign exchange market, the yuan is allowed to rise or fall by 2 percent from the central parity rate each trading day.

The central parity rate of the yuan against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of prices offered by market makers before the opening of the interbank market each business day.
