Thousands rally in Yemen's capital to protest against Gaza starvation

Tens of thousands of Yemenis gathered for a mass demonstration in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Friday to protest against what they called a "man-made" mass starvation in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The demonstrators convened at Al Sabeen Square in southern Sanaa to denounce Israel's ongoing military actions against Gaza, the border blockade, and the tactic of using hunger as a weapon by preventing food supplies from entering. They accused Israel of committing genocide against civilians and forcibly relocating them, attempting to clear the area of Palestinians, and also expressed anger at the international community's silence regarding the situation.

"Such gatherings have a powerful impact. First, they resonate with the fighters and the people of Gaza, letting them feel not isolated. Secondly, I am sure the enemy is watching these scenes frame by frame, and they are impacted, even if they pretend to be indifferent. Their threats to Yemen serve as evidence that they feel the power of public opinion is stronger than missiles and drones. The Yemeni people are an unstoppable force," said Sheikh Hussein Hazeb, Former Minister of Higher Education in the Sanaa government and a leader in the General People's Congress.

Israel has limited humanitarian aid from entering Gaza for months, causing a mass starvation that has already killed 122 Palestinians, mostly children, according to Gaza's health authorities.

Israel and Hamas have held weeks of indirect negotiations in Qatar, but no progress has been declared so far.

The Houthi group, which controls much of northern Yemen, has been launching ballistic missiles and drones toward Israel since November 2023 to show solidarity with the besieged Palestinian people and to pressure Israel to end its war and blockade on Gaza.
