The torchbearers who participated in The World Games' first ever torch relay held in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Saturday have expressed their excitement to be part of history. The torch relay for the World Games was held for the first time in the event's history on Saturday, launching from the iconic Sanxingdui archaeological site in Sichuan Province, and tracing a route through major landmarks of Chinese civilization. Under the theme "Lighting Dreams with The World Games," the ceremonial flame was kindled at the sacrificial altar of the Sanxingdui Museum, a cradle of early civilization along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.

Huang Zhangjiayang, a gold medalist in group all-around rhythmic gymnastics at the Paris Olympics, said she was trilled to be the first torchbearer, and proud to see her hometown Chengdu hosting such a grand event.

"I'm truly thrilled that the World Games are being held in my hometown. It makes me very happy that Chengdu is hosting this event, just as it hosted the Universiade previously. And I believe that in the future, Chengdu will continue to take on more major international multi-sport events. People of Chengdu warmly welcome athletes and friends from all over the world to come and experience our city, to feel the hospitality of Chengdu and witness our high standards and dedication in organizing events," said Huang.

Sandra Sanchez, chair of the International World Game Association Athletes Committee, is also one of the torchbearers.

"When I received the email, I was like 'oh, really?' This is an amazing opportunity because it's very special. It's the first time in the history of the World Games and I'm here. I'm a little nervous because I want to make everything correct, of course, but I want to show the world how amazing is this opportunity. I think the city is very clean and the people is so kind with all of us. And I hope this feeling is with all the people," she said.

Spanning three cities -- Chengdu, Deyang and Meishan -- the relay route connected six major cultural landmarks, including Sanxingdui, Jinsha, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Wuhou Shrine, Meishan San Su Shrine Museum and Xinglong Lake Wetland Park.

Each stop along the route symbolized a facet of Chinese culture, from ancient civilization and ecological awareness to national spirit and international friendship, while also paying tribute to the enduring spirit of sportsmanship, showcasing the rich heritage and values the host city brings to the global stage.

The torchbearer lineup featured 120 individuals from around the world and various walks of life, including Wu Weiren, chief designer of China's lunar exploration program; famous Chinese actor Jackie Chan; Olympic table tennis champion Ma Long; panda conservation expert James Edward Ayala; lifestyle vlogger and cultural heritage promoter Li Ziqi; as well as students and grassroots workers.

Around 150 people, including representatives of the International World Games Association, China's national sports authority, regional officials from Sichuan and Chongqing, and members of the public, attended the inaugural ceremony.

Villages in Thailand's Sisaket Province, which borders Cambodia, are quiet and empty after residents were evacuated to shelters.

With permission from the Thai military, a China Media Group (CMG) reporter entered the border conflict zone on Sunday and saw bullet holes scattered across residential buildings, as well as deep craters left by rocket and artillery fire.

"Villagers had been evacuated to shelters, leaving only us security personnel in the area," said Thai army Lieutenant General Patchakorn.

He added that civilians are not yet able to return home, citing the unstable security situation and ongoing hostilities.

Artillery fire could still be heard at the scene throughout the day. Thai military officials said the explosions were caused by Thai artillery strikes targeting Cambodian positions.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said Sunday that Thai forces have taken control of nearly all targeted areas and are now compelling Cambodian forces to withdraw, adding that the areas are being closely monitored to prevent any renewed clashes.

The latest round of Thailand-Cambodia conflict, which reignited since Dec 7, has resulted in the deaths of 34 Thai civilians, Thai Ministry of Defense spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri told a press conference on Sunday.

The civilian death toll in Cambodia has risen to 19, Cambodia’s Defense Ministry said on the same day.
