Relief efforts are underway in Miyun, a suburban district of Beijing, following the latest round of heavy rainfall that has caused widespread disruption of communication and power supply and trapped residents.
In recent days, extreme and severe convective weather brought by warm, moist air from the edge of the subtropical high has occurred in Miyun and other areas in Beijing.
At 20:00 Monday, the Beijing municipal flood control headquarters activated the highest level of its citywide flood-control emergency response mechanism.
The rain has damaged 58 roads in Miyun's Bulaotun Township, cutting off power and communication to most villages.
Authorities have evacuated residents from low-lying areas and those living near rivers. As of Monday afternoon, 789 residents have been relocated to temporary shelters set up in village committee offices and schools.
"Those of us living in low-lying areas have mostly been moved here," said Ye Fuzhong, a resident of Choushanzi Village in Bulaotun.
Local officials and volunteers were seen delivering essential supplies to the relocation sites. Meanwhile, rescue and repair operations were in full swing.
"Four roads have been fully reopened. We are also actively coordinating efforts to repair power and communication infrastructure," said Sun De'en, deputy head of Bulaotun Township.
In Taishitun Township, excavators and emergency vehicles have been dispatched to affected areas, helping clear debris and relocate trapped villagers to safety.
"I arrived here around 09:00. We've taken emergency rescue machinery, including 30 forklifts, 10 excavators and a large truck," said Xiang Haiyang, a rescuer.
As of midnight Monday, a total of 80,332 people have been relocated across the city, and the maximum rainfall was registered in Miyun, reaching 543.4 mm, according to local authorities.
