Young people in the United States are hoping for dialogue rather than confrontation regarding the trade relationship with China.

"The consequences of a bad trade relationship, it's massive. It's affecting jobs. It's affecting manufacturing. It's affecting inflation, and even the strength of the U.S. dollar. I think we need to trade with China because we work better together," Max Gallaguer, a 23-year-old U.S. student, said Friday in an interview with the China Global Television Network (CGTN).

From July 28 to 29, Chinese and U.S. economic and trade delegations held talks in Stockholm, Sweden. The two sides engaged in candid, in-depth, and constructive exchanges on China-U.S. economic and trade relations, macroeconomic policies and other issues of mutual concern.

Leia Marquiegui, a 21-year-old student, said she expects the negotiation between the two countries more open.

"My expectations are for it to be peaceful and more open. Because we are not always going to agree, but we can at least try to understand each other. And our generation is going to suffer the consequences of today's choices. So, I just want it to be peaceful and smart," she said.

Both students agree that China and the United States must enhance communication, negotiate on equal footing, and replace confrontation with dialogue to build a more peaceful and rational future.

"Cooperation is when two of them are working together and negotiating from a place of equality. That doesn't mean to ignore our differences. It means to get together in the same interests. We have our differences and that's okay, but we cannot have one actor acting like he's the boss," said Gallaguer.
