Grassland destinations attract tourism with folk sports, breathtaking scenery

The stunning scenery and tapestry of folk culture in China's grasslands have given rise to a wave of tourism to the country's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in the north and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the west.

On Sunday, visiting spectators gathered to view thrilling folk sporting events like horse racing and archery in the grasslands of Zhuozi County in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia.

Over 300 horses galloped under the control of herders at the event. In the traditional 10-kilometer horse racing competition, 28 participants from Inner Mongolia's Hohhot, Baotou, and Ulanqab competed in a two-kilometer track, showcasing their speed and skills.

In a surprising turn of events, a 15-year-old contestant from Baotou City won the championship.

"This horse is five years old this year. I've been with it since it was a baby because I was there when it was born. We won the championship in this competition, and I am so happy," said Egeshi, champion of the horse racing event.

Outside of the sporting grounds, the grasslands come alive with herds of yaks, camels, and livestock, offering visitors a timeless glimpse into of nomadic life.

"I came here specially to experience this unique folk activity. On the way, I saw herds of cattle and sheep, yurts and colorful khata, all brimming with the atmosphere of folk culture," said a tourist.

Since late July, the Maquanwan Grassland in Mulei County, Xinjiang, has entered the most beautiful season of midsummer. Many travelers visit the county to enjoy the cool weather and enjoy the scenery.

The Maquanwan Grassland is a picturesque oval-shaped depression nestled among towering mountains at an altitude of 2,300 meters. Its western edge is fed by natural springs, ensuring a steady water supply that sustains the lush landscape. Rich in biodiversity, the grassland teems with diverse flora and fauna, making it the primary summer grazing ground for Mulei County.

The death toll in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip has risen to 71,441 since the conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted on Oct 7, 2023, with the number of injuries reaching 171,329, said Gaza's health authorities on Thursday.
