A Chinese Ministry of National Defense spokesman on Friday slammed the United States for whitewashing Japan's aggression and war crimes committed during the World War II, calling it "a grave affront to historical justice and an insult to the feelings of those who suffered from the Japanese aggression."

Senior Colonel Jiang Bin, the spokesman, made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing in response to a U.S. State Department statement claiming that 80 years ago the United States and Japan "stood shoulder to shoulder to safeguard peace and prosperity in the Pacific."

"During WWII, Japanese fascists committed heinous crimes and inflicted untold suffering on people around the world, including Americans. The U.S. side seems to have 'amnesia' about this part of history, whitewashing and glorifying Japan's war of aggression. This is a grave insult to historical justice and, more seriously, a deep hurt to the feelings of the people in victimized nations," Jiang said.

"This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. We urge the U.S. to abandon its geopolitical calculations, uphold a correct historical view of WWII, and join the rest of the international community in safeguarding the post-WWII international order to secure a more peaceful future for humanity," said the spokesman.
