The just-concluded 2025 World Games held in southwest China's Chengdu earned the distinction of the greatest edition in history due to its unparalleled organization, warm hospitality, and an electrifying energy that captivated athletes and spectators worldwide, according to International World Games Association (IWGA) President Jose Perurena.

With the extinguishing of the main torch, the 12th World Games drew to a close in Chengdu on Sunday night, receiving widespread acclaim. Perurena noted that the enthusiasm and dedication displayed by the Chinese people during the event pleasantly surprised him.

"Very dynamic. Because normally the Chinese people are very quiet. But (when they) sit in the stands and follow the competition, (they're) very dynamic. Consequently, this is good. It's changed totally -- a 100 percent change. I'm hearing all the opinions from many athletes, not only Spanish but also from other countries. The feeling is that these Games is the best in the history of the all games," said the IWGA president.

Perurena believes the event's success stemmed not only from the competitions themselves but also from the Chengdu locals who masterfully organized and warmly hosted this grand event.

"You have big honor for the population in Chengdu organizing these Games, because when the people -- all the people and athletes -- return home, they'll say, 'Oh, remember Chengdu?' Because Chengdu is very good," he said.

With warm hospitality, remarkable efficiency, and impeccable delivery, Chengdu has set new standards for future editions of the Games, Perurena added.

A total of 6,679 athletes, sports team officials and technicians from 116 countries and regions participated in the Chengdu World Games, setting a new record in terms of participation.

Launched in 1981 and staged every four years, the World Games is the highest-level international multi-sport event outside the Olympic Games, featuring sports and disciplines that are not on the Olympic program. This year's event ran from Aug 7 to 17.
