The trend that China will and surely achieve reunification is unstoppable, Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu said in Beijing on Friday.

Ma made the remarks in response to a media query during a press conference on activities marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Taiwan's restoration to China is an outcome of the World War II victory and part and parcel of the postwar international order. A series of instruments with legal effect under international law, including the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, all affirm China's sovereignty over Taiwan. The historical and legal facts that Taiwan belongs to China are beyond doubt, said Ma. "The one-China principle is a common consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations. It is also the political foundation and prerequisite for China to establish and develop relations with all other countries. To date, 183 countries have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle. In 1971, the 26th session of the UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution 2758 by an overwhelming majority, which states the decision to restore all legitimate rights of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations and to expel forthwith the representatives of the Taiwan authorities from the UN and all its organs. The Resolution resolved once and for all the question of the representation of the whole of China, including Taiwan, in the United Nations, completely eliminating any possibility of 'two Chinas' or 'one China, one Taiwan'. The authority of the UN Resolution 2758 cannot be challenged," said Ma.

The Taiwan question is at the core of China's core interests, and resolving the Taiwan question and realizing China's complete reunification is a shared aspiration of all the sons and daughters of the Chinese nation, said Ma.

"The Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair and brooks no external interference. Those external forces who attempt to use Taiwan to contain China are playing with fire, and will only get burnt. The trend that China will and surely achieve reunification is unstoppable," he said.

On Sept 3, China will stage a grand military parade and a gala to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is deeply concerned about the U.S. rhetoric suggesting possible intervention in the situation in Iran, urging all parties to pursue diplomacy and dialogue in line with the principles of the UN Charter, his spokesperson said on Monday.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that his administration is weighing "some very strong options," including potential military action against Iran amid the unrest across the Middle East country.

At a press briefing Monday at the UN Headquarters in New York, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, conveyed Guterres' alarm over the remarks.

"The rhetoric that we've heard around the situation in Iran, which is concerning to him (Guterres), and he encourages all to adopt a path of diplomacy and dialogue," said Dujarric.

"We push for dialogue, and I think the [UN] Charter is very clear on your question," Dujarric said when asked whether foreign intervention might help resolve the crisis. The UN Charter enshrines core principles including the sovereign equality of all states, non-intervention in the affairs of other states, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

These norms were further reinforced by the 1970 Declaration on Principles of International Law, adopted by the UN General Assembly, which explicitly states that no state or group of states has the right to intervene, directly or indirectly, for any reason whatever, in the internal or external affairs of any other state.

Protests have erupted in several Iranian cities since late December over the sharp fall in the national currency rial and long-standing economic hardships. The reported death toll from the unrest on both sides of the security forces and civilians is mounting.
